Es gibt zwei Semester im Jahr, das Wintersemester (Mitte Oktober oder Anfang November bis Mitte oder Ende Februar) und das Sommersemester (Mitte April oder Anfang Mai bis Mitte oder Ende Juli). Die Semesterferien sind lang, aber sie sind für die meisten Studenten keine freie Zeit. Viele Studenten müssen in den Ferien jobben oder ein Praktikum machen. Oft lesen sie in der Bibliothek, schreiben dort ihre Seminararbeiten oder bereiten sich auf das nächste Semster vor, denn in den Semsterferien ist die Bibliothek nicht so überfüllt.

There are two semesters in the year, the winter semester (middle of October or beginning of November to the middle or end of February) and the summer semester (middle of April or beginning of May to the middle or end of July). The semester break is long, but they are for most students not free time. Many students must work during the break or do an internship. Often they read in the library, write their seminar papers, or prepare for the next semester, then in the semester break the library isn't so overfull.

Studenten studieren ein oder zwei Fächer. Ihre Kurse sind alle in diesen Fächern. Nehmen wir zum Beispiel Klaus Brendel aus Aachen. Er studiert Physik und Informatik und möchte Ingenieur werden. Er muss keine Kurse in Englisch, Geschichte und Biologie machen, denn das hat er in der Schule germacht. In Deutschland führen Professoren keine Anwesenheitslisten und nur wenige Kurse haben jedes Semester Prüfungen. Dafär gibt es nach vier Semestern eine Zwischenprüfung und dann das große Examen am Ende.


There would be a translation of that second paragraph but I am bloody exhausted. It's been a hideously long day. I do need to call my Mom this weekend. Grandpa went to the estate lawyer's today, which means that the mental assessment thing was probably this week too, judging by comments about all appointments at once. I'd kind of like to know what's going on.
