She was doing the noir thing tonight, ish, because there was a film festival down the road. Maybe she could catch some of the people in between their shows, or while they skipped out of a movie they didn't like as much. Black dress, white accents, cool jazz and easy blues. Bedroom eyes makeup in midnight blue and silver, foundation a shade or so paler than her actual skin color to give her that old-movie look. The only touch of color was her bright red lipstick. All femme fatales had red lipstick. Red dresses, too, sometimes, but she didn't have the blonde thing going for her. So black dress it was, and red drawing out the curve of her lips.
Veronica sat up straight on the stool but her lips caressed the bulb of the microphone, head arched downward to give the appearance of being hunched over without any of the unsightly things that hunching did to your body. She shaped and enunciated the words as much as she could so they could practically follow along from the motion of her lips, if the audience wanted to. Hard work, though. Needed focus for the proper mood.
She looked back up at the end of her set and couldn't help but smile. Yes, there was David, stretched out at his usual with the good view of the stage and not so good a view from the rest of the room of the table itself. At this point it seemed like the bartender or floor manager or someone just saved him that table for her sets.
"Hey, Mac... Yeah, thanks." Anticipating her needs, the water bottle slid across the bar to her open hand before she had finished asking for it. She opened it and had managed to raise it to her mouth when she made it to the table. "You look like you're enjoying the show."
He grinned back, eyebrows slightly arched. "You're all... made up."
"Huh? Oh, the lipstick. The Old Rialto's having a film festival, figured I'd go subtle, kind of cash in on it..."
"There's nothing subtle about that lipstick."
She laughed, but the assertion stuck in her mind as they talked. So that was where his focus was. After the sexting incident the other week Veronica had settled down some, at least attempted not to move too fast or be too bold, but this was just an invitation to be naughty.
The bartender brought a shake around; she'd left her drink order with him before her set started. She asked about David's day while she broke into it, licking whipped cream off the straw with an extra whip of the tongue around the white-covered tube. He didn't even stammer, which she appreciated with some amusement, but his focus definitely was not on their usual eye contact. White cream on red lips. She licked her lips after and blessed whatever company made that two-in-one lipstick. It did stay on through a lot of wear and tear.
The cherry on top was even better. She had to, of course, lick or suck all the whipped cream and all the milkshake off of it at first, then waved it around at him to punctuate some point she'd been making about taking opportunities where you found them. Which was not only appropriate to the evening but to what she was doing right now. And then he made her laugh, as he often did, and instead of eating the cherry like a normal person she dropped it back into her shake so she'd have to do it all over again. Which she did, several minutes later. More shake than whipped cream this time, but the cherry was sweet.
Ahem.
"Hey, I can tie one of these in a knot with my tongue," she grinned at him, and promptly demonstrated her skill before he could say hang on let's go somewhere more private.
Poor David's cheeks were definitely flushed by now, but he was smiling, too, which was the best part. Eyebrows raised at her antics, but smiling. She enjoyed teasing him, and he seemed to enjoy being teased, especially when it wasn't the same kind she'd started off doing. Available but not. This was more, promising future fun even if neither of them was quite ready to hit that point yet.
Until then, it was fun with vanilla bean milkshakes and ice cream sundaes, cherries on top.
