A statement of the form "moun A なら　predicate X" says that predicate X applies only to A and is not more generally valid. The main ideas of a なら sentence, in other words, are "limitation" and "contrast."

Q:　ブラジルに行ったことがありますか。
Have you ever been to Brazil?
A:　メキシコなら行ったことがありますが、ブラジルは行ったことがありません。
I've been to Mexico, but never to Brazil.

Q:　日本語がわかりますか。
Do you understand Japanese?
A:　ひらがなならわかります。
If it's in Hiragana, yes.

Example exercise: メアリーさんはけさ、　コーヒーを飲みましたか。
こうちゃなら飲みましたが、　コーヒーは飲みませんでした。

１．メアリーさんはバイクに乗れますか。
じてんしゃなら乗れますが、　バイクは乗れません。
２．メアリーさんはニュージーランドに行ったことがありますか。
オーストラリアなら行ったことがありますが、　ニュージーランドは行ったことがありません。
３．メアリーさんはゴルフをしますか。
メアリーさんはテニスならしますが、　ゴルフはしません。

Augh Dragon*Con. AUGH. Why the hell does this always take me by surprise every year? I always say I'm going to have everything done, the house clean, my desk clean, and then something happens and I'm scrambling to find the time to pick up everything before I go. Argh. and now I'm making a last minute toga-y thing. Possibly with unitard if I can find one. I think I can persuade the boy to go by the Halloween store on our way out to finish it up.

Argh. Argh argh. All these last minute things argh and double argh. Tomorrow, definitely a shopping list. And. Something. Maybe trying to organize my head so that I don't lose it before the Con starts.
