Vasya: Hi! Sorry we're late. [Lit. Guys, excuse us, that we were late.]

Лена: Да что ты, Вася! Заходите, раздевайтесь! Прошу к столу!
Lena: Don't worry about it, Vasya! Come in, take off your coat. Come to the table.

Аля: Какой стол праздничный! Лена, ты, наверное, три дня готовила.
Alya: What a grand feast! Lena, you probably worked/cooked/prepared for three days.

Вася: Ребята, я бы хотел тост поднять за хозяйку дома.
Vasya: Guys/Folks/equiv., I'd like to toast/to raise a glass/to raise a toast [most literal, I think, less commonly used in English] to our hostess (of the home).

Алёша: Давай. Мы все слушаем!
Alyosha: Yes, do. We're listening!/Everyone's listening!

Вася: Друзья, я предлагаю выпить за Лену. За все годы нашего знакомства ты нам принесла столько счастья, столько добра. Лена, за тебя!

Lena: Oh, Vasya. Thank you. That was very sweet of you. [Book has this as 'how sweet of you!']

Alya: Guys! Let's leave/do without the television! Play music. Let's dance! Put on your red shoes and... ahem. Sorry. Bowie fixation.

Rachel: You don't need to bring anything. We [will prepare] everything ourselves.

Настя: Договорились. До четверга.
All right/agreed. Till Thursday.

Yes, because running into a bumblebee is fun first thing in the morning. Get out of my walking path, bee.

Twenty. Five. Push-ups. Brainweasels can suck it. I did twenty five push-ups today, ten days ahead of schedule. Even if that translation took longer than expected. Not out of any real difficulty with anything except pushing words through my head, in any language. I'm fairly sure Spanish was trying to creep out there somehow. Maybe one day I'll just translate these straight into Spanish. ... No, Jag, we have enough to do, you are not translating these dialogues into Spanish right now.

I don't know what it is about my current exercise regime that's leaving me so sweaty, but good gods. And since over the past couple days I've been pushing myself harder, doing more sets of a couple different exercises, ow my limbs ache. (Battements and yoga poses, for those of you keeping track at home.) Mostly thighs, some ribs and abs, mostly thighs and arms, though. Still. Twenty five push-ups. I will have superheroic arms yet!

There's a few each of the Old Man, Sweet Pea, and Rocket, Amber in the Mecha, Baby Doll, a group shot, a few artsy shots. I decided I wanted Sucker Punch icons and ended up making a bunch of them. Oops. Not really oops. The coloring even worked out on most of them. Zach Snyder and his use of color and slow motion, I swear. There will probably be more coming. I also need to upload that bunch of Dan Shor icons.

Наверное=probably.
Of cource=конечно.
And it seems to me that the 2nd sentence is not perfect from a semantics point of view.

You skipped 'Лена, за тебя!'.
For many years of our acquitance with you/being friends with you. Here знакомство rather mean being frends.

Думала - past tense(btw, tenSe or tenCe?) Now she knows when the holiday is and don't thinks so. I don't think it's correct to translate is as 'I think'.

Definitely not lunch. Maybe feast again. Russian обед is not equal to lunch, except the lunch consists of soup and at least one (maybe more) courses. There's a mess with the translation of meals' names from English to Russian and again. In US you have: breakfast. lunch, dinner, right? Breakfast translates as завтрак and lunch as ланч, no problems yet. Dinner translates as обед, and here is the problem. In Russia обед is a meal in the middle of the day. US dinner is an evening meal. Russian evening meal is called ужин. It translates as supper, but I've never seen this word anythere outside dictionarys )So the conclusion is: if this meal is actually in evening - translate it as ужин.

Mmm. Is it correct to say "At half-six"? I was told (long ago, at school 8) ) that половина шестого translates as half past five (but I've seen many times, that this "school English" has few commons with the real one).

I promise I knew the probably/of course. Truly I did. My brain didn't work properly and swapped them, is all. ;) Actually I remember those two in particular because my habit is to translate конечно as por supuesto first, and into English second.

I am having so many moments of brain skipping over or repeating things today. I'll see what I can do on the skipped sentence, but I may have to wait until I get home from work and have my textbook and dictionaries.

Tense, yes. Whoops. Must pay attention to my tenses!

Hmm. The textbook translated обед as lunch, which makes semantic sense if it's in the middle of the day, but no, it doesn't work for a case like this. Feast is probably the best, yes, because a feast can be a little bit outside the normal hours of daily meals. And is still usually the last meal of the day. I'll have to write down this note on meals, though, thank you!

Half-six, half past six, or six-thirty are all acceptable. Half-six might, I think, be more a northwestern US and United Kingdom phrase than a US American English phrase. My English mixes a lot of different places, and I use a lot of different idioms. I think those are all the common ones for that. Few commons = few things in common, is the phrase. :)

... Right! Because, if I remember right, сами adds emphasis of self. ... That didn't come out as clear as I wanted.

Hmmm.
Половина шестого means 17:30. Six-thirty - 18:30. So if half-six is equal to six-thirty then половина шестого is half-five.

So does the word 'supper' nowadays means anything in context of meals?

My textbooks never actually devoted any chapters to the numbers, so my grasp on numbers is a little shaky sometimes. Or maybe it's my memory for how shaky it is, and I don't look it up when I should.

Supper is most often used interchangeably with dinner, in the United States. In Canada or the UK or Australia there might be different patterns.

I've been having this urge to write something non-fictiony about film for a while. If only because I have piles of research and articles sitting on my hard drive that are otherwise doing nothing but taking up space. I also may just be looking for an excuse to rewatch movies like Sucker Punch and 300. But especially Sucker Punch.

Do it! I babble about languages and such often enough, other people need to babble about things they have experience or learning in. If only for my amusement and/or edification. Besides, Sucker Punch is always worth watching again.

I think I've avoided writing it if only because I wasn't sure anyone would find it remotely interesting. That and I tend to not write ...academic stuff in the way that one typically would write academic stuff. Which could be good or bad. I haven't quite decided which yet.

Also, if nothing else it could make for an interesting discussion.

She does encompass most (if not all) of the qualities I like in a female character. Especially a lead. That and I love Abbie Cornish.

I've discovered that Bradley Cooper isn't just a pretty face and can actually act, which makes Limitless much more intriguing for me.

His character is wonderfully devious and clever in it. Still pretty and charming, but then it wouldn't really be Bradley Cooper if this wasn't the case.

I wasn't too sure about the A-Team movie when I saw it, which is the first ... no, the second place I saw him in, but the first place I registered who he was. But he and Sharlto Copley did excellently as Face and Murdock. My childhood was appeased.

Sharlto Copley was actually the guest speaker at my graduation - apparently he knew the principal of our film school since they were kids or something - and, wow, he's everything and nothing like what you'd expect.

Bradley...I think I've seen him in a couple of things over the years. Minor stuff, mostly, and I didn't loathe him but I wasn't particularly impressed with him either. However, Limitless did have me rethinking my opinion on him, at least as a serious actor. I suppose time will tell whether or not it was a once off thing or not.

... And the hilarious, synchronicitous, or something like that thing is, when you mentioned going to film school I did wonder, hmm, Sharlto Copley is from that vague geographic area and was a big production guy before they stuck him in front of the camera, I wonder if she... nah, it's only the same country, and what are the odds. Apparently there really are only 500 people in the world. Maybe 1000. (This comes about because for the last month or two I keep running into narrower and narrower degrees of separation between people.)

Anyway.

Bradley Cooper was in a TV show I used to watch called Touching Evil, the US version. And recently I managed to get ahold of video files of all the episodes, instead of the just one that was released on DVD. He actually did a really good job in that, I was surprised and barely recognized him, even, at first. And I also saw him in Midnight Meat Train. That was a late night channel flip hey, that looks familiar, wait, that's Vinnie Jones. And Bradley Cooper what? type thing.

It seems that the South African film industry is, indeed, a lot smaller than most folk realize. I was shocked - albeit pleasantly so - when he came on-stage.

The first really significant role I remember seeing him in - if you can really call it that - was his role in Alias, now that I think about it. And he was actually pretty good in it. Huh.

Apparently! I would be, too, really. Although we had some decent big-name type speakers at my college. Jane Goodall, since it was an anthropology and liberal arts focused college.

Hmm. I keep meaning to pick up Alias, but it just seems so silly.

Well, in the grander scheme of things I think Jane Godall beats Sharlto in the impressiveness stakes.

It is rather. I only really watched it for David Anders and even then it was only on and off.

But yeah, I was over the moon when she came to speak. They had her in the gym rather than the auditorium because it was the only place they could put that many people. She was very good. We also had a Navajo code-talker in one class, Ursula LeGuin taught a writing class before my time there... it was a cool college that got a lot of cool people.

I'd only be watching it for Bradley Cooper. Although, heh, David Anders, depending on what happens at Dragon*Con I might have to watch more with him in it.

I cannot argue with you there.

It certainly sounds like a cool place to go to. My college was the sister campus of the original - and much cooler, at least according to the people that I know who visited there - campus and therefore tended to lose out somewhat when it came to cool things happening there. So his coming to speak to us was a pleasant surprise.

He even gave a good speech, which was nice.

I blame season two of Heroes. His character was one of the few things that I thought was good about it - I was dreadfully disappointed when they killed him off since I'd been hoping for him to meet up with Claire and then the two of them could commiserate on being immortals and so forth.

Awww, that's good! There's nothing quite like the disappointment of looking forward to someone cool or interesting speaking, only to find out that they're not actually that good of a speaker after all.

They killed him off in such an abrupt, dismissive way, too. For a character who'd been built up as an immortal criminal mastermind, it was really disappointing.
