You know that the instrumental case is used after с - with

Мы с братом играли в теннис. My brother and I played tennis.
Кремль находится рядом с Красной площадью. The Kremlin is next to Red Square.

The instrumental case is used after certain verbs, without the preposition. The verbs in this unit that require the instrumental case are listed below:

увлекаться чем - to be wild about, to be into (doing something)
заниматься чем - to be occupied with (lit)
становиться/стать кем - to become something or someone
интересоваться чем - to be interested in
пользоваться чем - to use
быть кем - to be something or someone (more later)

-- Чем вы увлекаетесь? What do you really like?
-- Спортом. Sports.

-- У вас можно пользоваться велосипедами? Is it possible to use the bicycles here?
-- Да, и если вы интересуетесь другими видами спорта, можно пользоваться аэробикой. Yes, and if you are interested in other sports, you can use the exercise equipment or do aerobics.

-- Когда я была маленькой, я мечтала стать врачом. When I was little I dreamed of becoming a physician.

-- Когда я был маленьким, я был уверен, что стану известным рок-музыкантом. When I was little I was sure I'd become a big rock star. (famous rock musician)

становиться/стать - to become
становлюсь, становишься, становятся
стану, станешь, станут

Наши студенты все становятся спортсменами. Our students all become athletes.

Эта студентка станет спортсменкой. This student will become an athlete. (This student is female.)

Note on быть

In sentences stating that a person or thing is something (present tense), Russian uses the nominative case for the subject and complement without a verb. Я музыкант.

Outside the present tense, the instrumental case conveys nonpermanent states, such as professions(Он был музыкантом.) or transient conditions (Когда они были маленькими, они были весёлыми, а потом стали серьёзными. - When they were small, they were fun-loving, but then they became serious.)

The past of быть is often followed by the instrumental case for nouns and their modifiers: Я был известным музыкантом. I was a famous musician. If an adjective or noun of nationality follows the verb, it is expressed in the nominative, not the instrumental, since nationality is not considered a transient state. Наша бабушка была русская, а дедушка был француз. Our grandmother was Russian, our grandfather was French.

In the future tense and the infinitive быть is usually followed by the instrumental case: Я буду музыкантом. I will be a musician. Я хочу быть музыкантом.

2. С кем вы говорите по-русски? С моей подругой. И с Мишей. (Миша?)
3. С кем вы играете в теннис? ... Я не играю в теннис.

So, Human Target was cancelled. I'm not entirely surprised, but I am bummed we won't have Jackie on screen every week for a quarter of the year. On the other hand, the writing was so failtastic last season I'm kind of glad about that part.

This morning was just plain weird and off-kilter. I went out for my walk and the skies opened up halfway through, so I came back and fucked around on the computer till it was the hour for dancing. And while I was out walking I ran into stupid pet owner day, not one but two pets out wandering around the park without any humans in sight. The cat's owner (beautiful leopard kitty of some kind) I'll forgive, because it had a tag and bell and looked pretty freaked out and I think it just escaped, which happens sometimes. The dog had no visible or audible tag or anything that jingled on it, it was just running around all playful like in the park. With no owner. I have no idea what the fuck was up with that but it irritated me. I tried to get ahold of the cat to see where it lived, but I couldn't. Alas.

Oof. Somehow still sleepy, although less obviously so? Less definitively so. I'm not going oh god I only got four hours of sleep last night, more like oh god I can't wake up. And most of the unpacking from Maryland got accomplished yesterday, and today's at least a light incoming from UPS day, so there's that. Not sure what else is going to happen today. Hopefully nothing too terrible. I'm in one of those moods where I might handle it well or I might eat someone's liver without beans out of sheer absent-minded irritation.
