The annoying thing about painting miniatures is that sometimes it's awfully hard to tell what the hell you're painting. Is that part of his bracer? Is that a fur inlay into the leather? Is that part of his tunic, or his arm? Just what the hell is this I'm painting? Is that his codpiece or...
Ahem.
To solve this, I take a hefty does of fuckitall.
I paint the whole thing one color; going with the example from above I paint the whole bracer an identical shade of brown. And then, since I use Vallejo paints and they're quick-drying (thank you!) I go over the laces with one color, what looks like his shirt with another color, the possible inlay with a third color, and then later on if I haven't sealed it all yet I can still change it.
Or, failing all that, I can just dump the fucker into a bin of paint thinner and start all over again.
