Abbreviating verbal expressions, using です
きのう 何を 買いましたか。 えんぴつです。
What did you buy yesterday? I bought a pencil. (lit. It's a pencil.)
アリスさんは 何を 買いますか。 ベルトです。
What are you going to buy, Alice? I am going to buy a belt. (lit. It's a belt.)
です acts as a substitute for a verb previously mentioned. In colloquial language, substitution with です is very common when answering a question asking for information.
です can be used even when the previously mentioned verb is in the past tense.
The particles が, で, を, and に associated with regular verbs are deleted before です, but から, まで, and と may stay.
It is impolite to use です for every question asking for information. If you overuse it when talking to the same person, you might sound indifferent or cold. (This sort of makes sense. Using short-form things all the time, especially really short form, seems to give the impression of being dismissive.)
A: どこに いきますか。
D: とうきょうに いきます。 です。
1. A: いつ 日本に 行きますか。
B: こんしゅうの 月曜日
2. A: どこで その ふくを 買いましたか。
B: あそこの デパート
3. A: 何時から 授業が 始まりますか。 (はじまる)
B: 8時から
4. A:だれが 電話を かけましたか。
B: アリスさん
5. A: なんじまで 勉強しましたか。
B: 十二時まで
I think I did that right. Hurm.
Right. No one is allowed to come to Dragon*Con anymore, unless they bump another guest off the list. Because damn. My list of autographs I want is rapidly verging on epic. (And by epic I mean 40.) And, granted, not all of those are people I necessarily will stand in line 20 minutes for, but still. A lot of them are the kind I want to ambush. Which is a little weird. I'd half expected most of the B5 crew, most of whose autographs I already have, to be there. But, no, only ... two, I think, B5 actors. and a whole host of Eureka and Warehouse 13 and various others. And Firefly people. And Heroes people. And various other people. Yeeesh.
So, yeah. But, I've poked my finances, and even with the bills I have currently, I'm set to go to Dragon*Con fully flush and funded. Which is kind of awesome. And next year I'll have two costumes I can wear, and some garb, and maybe the other two days I'll wear a different costume or maybe I'll assemble something different if I get a wild hair, but I'll be spending a LOT less on assembling the damn outfits than I did this year and last year. It's a lot easier when all you have to buy is stockings and maybe some new insoles or makeup.
Speaking of costumes, though. Thanks to my minor flaily panic about leotards for my Cheetara costume (why is it so fucking hard to find a simple wide-strap cross-back leotard in white? Bloody HELL.) I now have a frillion other leotards (read: five) that are just hanging around. I have two pink, one pale blue and one pale purple and one burgundy. Given that these are cross-back leotards, what superheroine costume could I make from these? Any recommendations?
Seriously, I need to not let Flutter's reluctance to do any work whatsoever infect me. Just because she irritates me doesn't mean I can punish her by leaving the order-picking for her to do. I can damn well do it myself, get it over with, get a bit of walking exercise, and not be worse off for it. Except in lack of writing time, but I haven't even started writing yet anyway, and I just did Japanese. Come on, self. Stop being so bitchy.
