You have seen several adjectives with the short form endings должен - obligated, свободен - free/not busy, занят - occupied/busy, похож - look like. In this unit you learn new short-form adjectives: рад - glad, открыт - open, and закрыт - closed. They differ from long-form adjectives in the following ways:

1. They occur only in the predicate adjective position. (That is, in connection with the verb to be.) This also means they appear only in the nominative case.

Мы заняты. We are busy.
Рад вас слышать! I'm glad to hear from you!

2. Their endings are shorter. Short form adjective endings look like noun endings.

[none] for masculine singular
-a for feminine
-o for neuter
-ы for plural

3. The plural form is always used with вы, even if вы refers to only one person. (See: past tense verb forms)

1. Сегодня вы свободны или заняты? Сегодня я занята.
2. А завтра вы будете свободны или заняты? Завтра я буду также занята.
3. Что вы должны делать сегодня? Сегодня я должна работать и учиться русский, немецкий и японский.
4. Что вы должны были делать вчера? Вчера я должна была работать и делать упражнения. (Yes! Or упражнятся)
5. Магазины в вашем городе открыты или закрыты в воскресенье? Мой магазин открыт в воскресенье! Да, магазины в моем городе открыты в воскресенье.
6. В какие дни открыта библиотека вашего университета? Библиотека моего университета открыта в работные дни.
7. Вы похожи на мать? Да, я похожа на мать.
8. Вы похожи на отца? Да, я похожа на биологического отца.
9. Ваши братья и сёстры похожи на родителей? Мои брат и сестра похожи на отца. Моя сестра похожа на мать.
10. Ваши дети похожи на вас? У меня нет детей.

Aaand. Mm. I think I actually even managed to do that without looking more than two words up. I'm not sure if I'm more startled by the fact that I pretty much read the questions straight up and formulated answers or if it's that I could formulate answers without stopping too much through English on my way to Russian. Of course, it's entirely possible that I fucked it all up, but hey! I don't think I screwed it up too bad. I do wish they'd devote part of a chapter to word order, but that's probably mostly because I have competing languages in my head vying for dominance over which noun-adjective word order influences the Russian.

Speaking of competing languages, I need to do something about the file tree in my brain. I was trying to find the infinitive "to work" (as in, at a job) in Russian in my head. My file search program found "arbeiten", which is German. It then gave Spanish and French a miss, went straight on to "アルバイト/arubaito" which is obviously Japanese. Left unchecked I think it would have gone through Italian and Irish before it finally came back to Russian. I think I need to defrag my brain or something.

PT exercises are hard, yo. I know they're supposed to be, but, ow. I'm not entirely sure I'm doing them quite right, but I think I am. And I can be corrected next week. Oogh. I also have the sneaking suspicion he may have given me a couple of exercises specifically to keep me from doing situps or other things because he knows I'm working out to build a little muscle as well as just keep in shape, or, well. I implied it. I know the yoga thing. Sneaky little hyperactive bugger. But apparently I have good posture and flexibility! Yay.

So, guess who managed to get some writing done on the desert novel? Oh yeah, that would be me. I even emailed my scifi big bang to my artist! The only thing that's currently bugging me is that I think I should have put word count estimates on the scenes for the desert novel. I may or may not work better with word count estimates per scene. It's a mystery! Which we'll find out the answer to later. Maybe I just need to go through and elaborate on the scenes piece by piece, signaling what gets highlighted and where and what doesn't and... pfff. I should have thought of this weeks ago. Ah well. I also need to start editing Martine. Not entirely looking forward to that, but at least it seemed to have turned out coherent.

The funny thing is about all this, I'm rapidly discovering that I would be very, very happy doing this for a living. Very happy. I don't even ... remember what I was going to say there, but, right now, I'm happy doing what I am doing? I could be happy either way! I'm not entirely happy about trying to cram into a deadline, but that's one of the hazards of, heh, signing up for a frillion things at once. It comes back to bite you in the ass later. Still. Writing novels, going back and editing them, bashing them into a coherent whole. Even if I do self publish these first couple (or three, or four) this is still kind of achieving a goal for me. I like it.
