In English, the all-purpose verb for movement to a position is to put, and the all-purpose verb for the resulting position is to be. (Okay, actually, this is not strictly true.) German uses several verbs to express the meanings put and be.

Placement: legen, gelegt (to lay); stellen, gestellt (to place upright, to stand); setzen, gesetzt (to set); stecken, gesteckt (to stick into); hängen, gehängt (to hang)

Location: liegen, gelegen (to be lying); stehen, gestanden (to be standing); sitzen, gesessen (to be sitting); stecken, gesteckt (to be inserted in); hängen, gehangen (to be hanging)

Remember the conjugation of heißen: Ich heiße, du heißt, Er/Es/Sie heißt, wir heißen, ihr heißt, sie heißen, Sie heißen.

Nouns are still gendered. This still makes German really, really annoying.

The indefinite/definite (in that order) articles are:
ein/der - male
ein/das - neuter/third gender
eine/die - female

Eine/Die is also used for the plural article.

Das Auto ist alt. (The car is old.)
Das Gewehr ist alt. (The gun (medium-sized gun) is old.)
Die Pistole ist neu. (The pistol is new.)
Das Jackett schwarz ist neu. (The black jacket is new.)
Das Jackett braun ist alt. (The brown jacket is old.)
Das Salz ist neu. (The salt is new.)

Dean ist alt. (Dean is tall.)
Sam ist mehr alt. (Sam is more tall.)


Oof. I actually did forget about TV shows tonight. Not sure how much I'm going to be watching since I'm going to try to be writing and then going-to-bed-ing. But we'll see.
