German has a class of masculine nouns that have signals for case. Not only the article, but the noun itself ends in –n or –en. In the vocabularies of this book, the masculine nouns will be followed by two endings: der Herr, -n, -en. The first ending is the singular accusative and the second is the plural ending. The masculine N-nouns I know so far are der Herr, der Junge, der Mensch, der Nachbar, and der Student.
(I’m noticing a pattern here; these are all people.)
