Everyone else at the school was forbidden to leave the building, even for Care of Magical Creatures or Herbology. Dennis was standing off to one side of the magical blue box that didn't seem to be magical at all, watching Professor Dumbledore circle around it as though it were some sort of new creature he had yet to fully explore.
"And you say this device travels through space… and time?"
"And time."
The Doctor seemed most enthusiastic about showing off his wonderful machine, which was something of a change from the angry and sullen person he'd met in the underground room with the creature, although now that Dennis thought about it there had been giddy moments as well. He wondered if this mysterious Doctor person was always like this or if it was just the shock of appearing suddenly in the home of a giant subterranean slime monster.
"Fascinating. And you accomplish this by means of…"
"A large number of arcane and wonderous devices, the operation of most of which would undoubtedly be lost on you. It's a long and complicated process."
"That broke down somewhere en route to a wedding, I understand?"
Dennis tucked his head down into his shoulders a little in his best imitation of a turtle. Both the Doctor and the Professor had turned to look at him, and he felt very small and foolish.
"I didn't mean to tell him only it slipped out and I don't even know where Barcelona is anyway, not really, except that it's in Spain and…"
"Actually, it's another planet."
"… and I didn't know he meant another planet except…"
"You were thinking, perhaps, of taking young Mister Creevey along with you?"
"… and I didn't meant to tell him that you asked if I wanted to come along, but I'm a student and I thought I should get permission from Professor Dumbledore and my parents if…"
"Dennis!"
Dennis was quiet. He watched Dumbledore take the Doctor's arm and make the gesture that one adult makes when he wants to talk to another ostensibly out of the child in question's hearing. Not that it ever worked, of course, except when it did and Dennis hoped that it wouldn't work this time without his coming up behind them and risking discovery.
They talked in low murmurs which should have been impossible for a man with a booming voice and another given to fits of arm waving and half-hysterical pronouncements. Dennis paced in front of the police box and pulled his hands into his robe so that he wouldn't see his palms sliding fast against each other.
He thought that maybe it was strange that he wanted to go off in this police box that wasn't a police box, that he wanted to leave all of Hogwarts behind. Colin would tell him that he was being madder than usual but Colin said that pretty often, and equally as often with a tone of awe and respect that suggested what he really meant was that Dennis would do all the things his brother was too afraid to do.
Going along with the Doctor in the police box was probably one of them. It was an adventure, and more, it was an adventure into the unknown, the real unknown, where the laws of magic might not work and there might not be teachers and members of the Order to help him out and he would be dependant on a man he'd just met for safety and personal comfort.
In a way, it was rather like attending Hogwarts, only Colin had got to that first.
The adults were coming back and that always meant ominous things, or at least that he had to straighten up and pretend he hadn't been eavesdropping. Which he hadn't, the thinking had gotten in the way of that and the getting distracted by history had gotten in the way of the thinking and in the end he hadn't decided anything.
"Dennis."
That was the Professor's kindly old man voice, the one he used when he was hiding something that could turn out to be dangerous.
"Yes, Professor?"
"The Doctor tells me you 'd like to go with him to the wedding in Barcelona."
"Yes, sir. I mean, if that's all right. If I could take the time off Hogwarts I could do my studying while I travel so that when I come back I'm all caught up and it would be sort of like an exchange program, I know I could…"
"Excellent."
Dennis blinked at the Professor. Ready acquiescence hadn't been what he'd expected. "Oh."
"Hogwarts has no student exchange program at the moment, but I certainly see no reason to deprive you of what could be a valuable learning experience in a more challenging field than we seem to be able to provide."
"Oh." So he'd heard about that, had he.
"Professor Dumbledore tells me that you're a very inquisitive young man." The Doctor seemed to find this amusing. "That's good, that's exactly the kind of attitude I like to encourage in my Companions. Inquisitive and perfectly obedient."
Dennis made an 'eh?' face.
"There will be dangers to face, Dennis." Dumbledore was using the tone of voice Dennis had only heard before eavesdropping at doors when he was talking to Harry. That meant it must be important, perhaps more important than anything he had heard or done so far. "There will be threats you have never experienced and could not imagine. The Doctor will be your guide and your guardian while you are traveling through space and time. You must listen to him at every turn, and do whatever he says."
Time and space. And he said it as though Dennis was only spending the summer in London.
"Yes, Professor." He turned to the other man. "Yes, Doctor."
"Excellent!"
"Run up and pack your things, then," the Doctor smiled. "We've got a long way to go, and less time to travel!"
Dennis was a little afraid of that smile.
