Newsprint, not package paper. Package paper refuses to uncurl and it's a pain in the ass.

Skirts are easy, easy, easy. So are skirt flounces, overlays, and panels. Yay!

Get someone else to take your measurements, even if that person has no idea what he's doing.

Measure yardage before you cut out mock-up fabric, not after. Also, copy pattern pieces onto whatever paper you're using before you cut out the mockup fabric, don't chalk them onto the mockup fabric itself. I don't care how much easier it seems.

SEAM ALLOWANCE! SEAM ALLOWANCE! HEM ALLOWANCE! RAARGH!

Screw your towel, always remember where you put your pins, scissors, and sewing chalk.

If you're adapting a pattern piece that says 'cut on fold' into two separate pieces, remember to adapt it from first the pattern print side up, then the pattern print side down. Not that I forgot this time? Just. Worth remembering.

Grainline can always be copied over at the end. Cutting instructions, however? Should go on before you start to cut, lest you forget what the hell you're doing.

MOCKUPS ARE YOUR FRIEND. You learn about things like a need for a facing.
