That's Trans-Siberian Orchestra, for the uninitiated. I think last year I was too busy squeeing to give a proper account, and really this year I'm too tired almost to be fashed to do it. I'll give it a shot.
TSO's Christmas concert is mostly the same every year. There's the Christmas story. I could reprint it here, I suppose, but I really can't be arsed to do so. It's on their website. It's beautiful. I always cry like a baby. Funnier bits include the intro to "A Mad Russian Christmas" which is a rock opera medley of Nutcracker bits. Something to do with "the angel asked, what do Russian hearts desire? Why, peace on earth of course, he said, and a little Stolichnya!" I'm so misspelling that, but you get the idea. More poignant bits include Sarajevo 12/24, and
The Angel had heard God speak many times
And he had always paid attention
But this killing of one's neighbor
God had never mentioned
There are lights. There are frikkin' laser beams. There was FIRE. There was MULTI-COLORED FIRE. There are platforms that lift the guitarists into the air. There are guitarists who make very bad jokes about becoming amateur astrologers. Apparently they didn't plan it. If you don't get it, read it out loud.
After the Christmas story they introduce the band, do a few more songs. Mostly Beethoven, some random rock bits. Carmina Burana. That's always fun, it looks vaguely Satanic the way they light it. There's a bit where they do da-da-da-DUMMMMMMM and on the 'dummmm' part the jets of flame shoot up and it's REALLY COOL. They're an amazing group. They always have a bunch of vocalists, singers and narrators, and then a violinist, keyboardist. Then some local orchestra. It's gorgeous. It's absolutely gorgeous. If you can possibly, go see it this year. Or next year, they do a lot of tours. Buy the DVD if you have to. It's beautiful.
That's pretty much what I did today. Last night was getting caught up on TM TRs. Tomorrow I'll get caught up on a few more, although I want to re-watch those eps of Angel before I do Holtz's. Tomorrow or, more likely, the next day.
Right now I'm going to call it an early night. I'm exhausted.
