Oct. 8th, 2014 03:51 pmWell, it took a while on account of leaving early to run errands and get stuck in the arm with a needle full of virus, but I managed to get Japanese done and Russian done and now I'm on page... 138 now, I believe. Yes. I am also sorely tempted to learn Dothraki. Why? Why not.
I'm not sure I have much else to say today. I'm enjoying my first real day of actually moving around without either a migraine or a head cold that has many of the same effects (no light sensitivity or nausea though), so that's fun. And then I have to get caught up on all the shit that I missed while I was sick, so that's less fun.
Wednesday Reads, though!
I read the entire Millennium trilogy, also known as those The Girl Who books, and I really liked them. I kind of want to take on Lisbeth Salander, maybe not so much as a role model (oh god no) but as inspiration for determination, and attention to detail. I'm not sure what else to say beyond I liked it, the pace of the mystery was good and I enjoyed the characters. I'm not sure, can I say I liked the writing when I read it in translation? Anyway, I now want to hunt down the Swedish movies. And possibly the English-language one. Mostly the Swedish one. Anyone know if they're available on Region 1 DVD?
I also read The Emperor's Knife, which is the big reason I didn't read much more, because that fucker was dense and sometimes hard to get through. The language was odd in places, and I think it obfuscated the events and the flow of the story, but overall the thing was decently enough drawn that I think I'll pick up the next two books at some point. Not enough of a page turner to get me to immediately buy the next one, but it's definitely on my list.
Right now I'm starting on Wild Swans by Jung Chang, out of sheer curiosity and because why the hell not. It's on my Kindle! I also want to take another stab at whittling down some of my non-fiction in a few days, now that I have something in the way of half a brain left to comprehend it with. Women Who Run With The Wolves is up there, and The Honest Courtesan and I have a bunch of others to get through.
Not Dothraki. I do not need to learn Dothraki. I do not need to learn Dothraki.
(It only has about 1150 words max. It'd be quick.)
