May. 25th, 2013 09:17 pmI would like to think I have achieved domestic goddesshood. Also found a use for the egg whites.
Let's see. Today I did most of the laundry, no, actually, I think I did all of the laundry. And folded it and put it away, I still have no idea why that should be as hard as it is to put away the clean clothes, but that's definitely one of the parts of being a responsible adult that continually eludes me. I transplanted the four o'clocks to along the house and the peppers and cucumbers into the raised beds, and dropped some carrot seed into the raised beds too. I have no idea if that'll come up at all, but it's worth a shot. And! And we went out and ran errands to get kitty litter and I got some verbena and scarlet salvia and snapdragons and marigolds! So I can put those in the raised beds tomorrow as soon as I clear at least some of them. And it's going to be awesome. I can't even begin to tell you guys this is going to be awesome. I am having so much fun.
Even if, or maybe especially if my method of picking plants to grow is a bit ... weird. I started with basil and rosemary because I use them, and sage because purification. (Because yes, I may not talk about it much. Or at all. But I am still a practicing pagan along with a very lackadaisical Jew.) And I got broccoli which was a qualified disaster the first time (bolted) and a groundhog induced disaster the second time, but now we have tomatoes in and onions growing bigger by the day both from seed and from starter bundles, and peppers and cucumbers which have started to flower and I sowed carrot seed. And, okay, that's for food, sure. And then I picked up some chocolate mint which is going in a pot, thank you very much. For those of you who don't garden, mint goes fucking everywhere. It is part of the borg family of plants. And I got more basil and some oregano and that's all cooking stuff, yes? Yes. The chocolate mint isn't cooking stuff, though. I thought it smelled good, so I picked it up.
Well, then my family learned I was gardening so they provided me with amaryllis. And lambsear and alumroot and echinacea. And four o'clocks. I have no idea what I'm going to do with at least two of those, but I'm not going to turn down free plants! So now I have those. And then today I went to the local nursery and picked up marigolds because my grandmother loved marigolds and always had them. And I picked up snapdragons because I love snapdragons. And I picked up verbena and salvia because they're pretty and because magicking. And I spent a truly excessive amount of time trying to find St John the Conqueror seeds online, also because magicking. Because it's suddenly occurred to me that I can have a garden. And grow THINGS. For pretty, for food, for all kinds of things. Also I looked up how to candy flowers. Because. Turns out it's actually very simple and relatively easy.
And the boy juryrigged a fix for the washing machine, so now all that's left is to clean up the mess and save up for an actual fix. Not sure what that will be yet, but hey. This is, of course, why I could spend most of today doing laundry. And. And I think the only domestic goddess thing I haven't done today is cooking. Because when I wasn't goddessing all over the place I was writing. Or editing.
I'm loving this three day weekend shit. I'm also loving this no immediate blog deadlines shit. It feels bizarrely like summer vacation, which is not what I expected to be doing at the ripe old age of thirty-mumble. Okay, no, I expected it, but only during the years when I still believed I could be a teacher without losing my mind over bureaucracy. So, yeah, this whole three day weekend shit seems to have resulted in all the domesticity ever. I'm strangely comfortable with this!
