Welp, after a couple of weeks? Week and a half? of decent sleep, last night I managed to wake up from a deep and relatively okay sleep to the 4 am sudden fear of oh god what if the boy drives off the bridge this morning on his way to drop the car off and dies? I don't even fucking know with that except these are the kinds of things I guess we think about at 4 am, or at least I think about at 4 am. It didn't help that he'd woken up earlier and quietly snuck downstairs to play video games at low volume so I woke up to an empty bed.

Then I woke up and the boy asked some questions about our maybe possible roommate from capoeira coming to stay with us for a couple months that sounded like he's amenable to it? I don't think I've mentioned this here yet but Wednesday Capoeira Puck asked if there was anyone we knew of looking for a roommate, and I said I didn't know but I'd talk to the boy and see because we'd originally thought about taking on a friend as housemate when we'd bought the house.

(No, we didn't buy the house with that as finances in mind for anything but oh the extra money will be handy for making repairs. Which it would be! It will be. Dear god, if she stays with us for three months we could get the roof reflashed. But it's by far not essential.)

Anyway, so I mentioned this to the boy and asked him to ask the gaming group too if anyone knew of anyone. That didn't happen, but he does sound positive about one of my capoeira friends moving in with us for a few months, and she is a sweetie. So they're going to meet when we all go out to lunch after capoeira tomorrow, and we'll see what happens then.

PLUS. The good news that's more solid, the boy by all accounts is getting a verbal yes from the VA! The way this is happening is a bit whispers-down-the-lane-y, basically one of our friends who works there tells him because she's close with her supervisor, who knows these things? And then the hiring person or the shift supervisor he'd be coming onto, I forget which, calls him up and says you're hired go do these physical tests. And once he passes the physical tests then he gets a written you're hired here's the official shit, and then it's safe for him to give notice at his current place. So we're both secure and have something to look forward to, so that is good news. And a pay raise because of federal shit, and a federal job with benefits. Possibly domestic partner benefits. You'd think my Mom would know this but she does not. We'll find out, because if the benefits are as good as I remember them being YES GIVE ME SOME OF THOSE TASTY BENEFITS.

Grugh. This makes the upshot yay good things are happening, holy fuck they're happening all at once, I need to get a lot of shit done at work (fortunately work is quietish so far so I might be able to) so I can go home and clean all the things so the living room and kitchen and upstairs bathroom don't look like quite so much of a pigsty. Because if things work out we'll haul her home and show her the house. And ... I have no idea when or how all of this is going to get done, and I have Helix to do, and. Holy shit it is busy. I have to figure out how to bash Russian checks into my brain somehow, I think probably in the morning do the one from yesterday and make it linked with Japanese, there's usually some time there, or will be once I finish getting into my daylight schedule. If I can ever fucking get a decent night's sleep. That's not helping. Good things happening! Good things that require a lot of business and effort.

On the other hand I guess if we're going to have a boarder, I'm glad we do have the separate house account so shit can just go in there. And now listing everything on Habitica and checking it off so I can kill the monster there. Maybe I'll put a done-did list here. That'd at least be reassuring.

Cleaning is great! I got a lot of laundry done myself, plus I managed to get at least some boxes of paperwork sorted through and - uh, well, not necessarily organized (or even filed), but I threw half the old stuff out, which I consider a victory nevertheless.

That's true! I even have some of the things sorted into something resembling order. Or at least sometimes they're subject-specific piles. Everything is in fantastic order at work, but that comes at the expense of things being in fantastic order at home. There can only be so much organization in my life.

I don't need a safety deposit box, but I'm finally acquiescing to the need for at least a small fireproof safe for the house to hold identity documents and other valuables. Probably ordered from someplace online where I get free shipping over X dollars, as I don't think that I would like to hoist it from my shopping cart into my car and then from my car into my house.

I'm paid to be organized, and also if I'm organized, I get harassed less by people who think I don't know what I'm doing. Because the appearance of organization goes a long way toward looking like you're competent, you know? :) Not that I am ever saying that everyone else's desks should be maintained like mine, because I do what works for me and expect everyone else does what works for them.

Oh, with a boarder, I'd probably want a safety deposit box too! But I don't have a boarder, just a child, and a frustration with the lack of organization that I at least want the most essential documents piled in one spot. (Honestly, write them all down! It'll give me more suggestions for what I need for the safe I will get eventually.) Occasionally I think about renting out our spare couch/tv room on airbnb, but then I think that I'd have to change the locks after or install some kind of combination lockbox, and I just don't want to put forth the effort. (I'm very paranoid. I blame it on a succession of petty thefts by relatives who stayed with us for visits when I was younger.)

Hoisting and carrying for a living would be impossible for me, so hearing that you do that and wouldn't want to hoist any kind of a safe, well, now I'm doubly convinced that ordering online is the right choice! Even a small safe, which is probably all I need. Not that I wouldn't love a safe for all my jewelry, but, let's face it, 90% of it probably isn't that valuable, just unique or vintage. (The bohemian look I mentioned on my DW last night has been in development years before I knew what "bohemian" was as anything other than "derived from the nation of Bohemia." Or even before I knew there had been a country named Bohemia. Not that I don't still dress in slacks and simple shirts at work quite often. I'm not particularly fashionable in general anyway.)

That is definite organization at work! In most of the offices I've worked in, knowing your shit is frustratingly not enough. You have to look good doing it too.

It's easier to have a boarder that you know! We've done it a couple of times, but Mr. Havoc is a fairly territorial introvert/misanthrope who feels better if his den is not invaded long-term by intruders. Which is 100% different from me, as I'm generally the person who enjoys company, people, and inviting them over for ages and ages and ages.

Heirloom jewelry is valuable for its weight of emotions, not necessarily the value. :) But it's often very one of a kind because, after a couple of generations, even the most mass-produced of things tend not to stay around. So you have memory and the knowledge that you'll never find anything like it again.
