Well, our painting adventure has semi-officially begun, with the purchasing of drop cloths and plaster and other things necessary to get the wall intact and ready for painting. Ulp. Also ulp that was a lot of money, reusable drop cloths are expensive, yo. But we're going to be doing a lot of painting, so I guess it's worth it to get tools we're going to reuse again and again and again. We've got at least four rooms in this house to paint, come to thi... no, five, including the kitchen. No clue what we're going to do about painting the kitchen, though.

How do you paint a kitchen that's already got shelves and cabinets and counters and appliances in? Lots and lots of plastic and painter's tape?

Ugh, people, if you hadn't done an absolutely shit job of painting this house with terrible colors when you were trying to flip it I wouldn't have to do this now.

The fun and funny symmetry to this is I'm also doing an HTML/CSS tutorial on Khan Academy and learning how to morebetter use HTML5 and current CSS, which essentially means I'm going to re-decorate and re-paint my web page. The problem, as I've (re-)discovered is not getting carried away and doing it all at once while I neglect other things. Like writing. And editing. Oops.

Anyway. I really have no idea how long this is going to take, either. How long it's going to take to get our already chipping ceiling down, how long it's going to take... okay, I have an idea that it's not going to take long, half a day to a day, to plaster and sand over all the parts that need plastering and sanding in the wall right now. I have no idea how long it's going to take to get the paint off the hardwood or if that's even something we'll do before we paint. On the plus side, the furniture can all go back in before we take the paint off the hardwood, so. that's something? It's all a bit daunting, though. Particularly moving our ridiculous-sized but very comfortable bed.

I guess on the plus? Side we did get new computers tonight, which is to say we spent way too much money on TigerDirect, mostly on the boy's computer but with any luck he won't need a new desktop for at least ten years. I know I'm not planning on needing a new desktop for at least five, and this one's, what, three or four years old? Yes.

Ugh and now I also have to budget for a couple extra raised beds and shittons of fertilizer to deal with all the raised beds I have. I have no idea where we're going to get the money for that, but I think about scaling down the garden plans and whine all 'don' wanna.' Surely there's got to be sales coming up. The rest of the painting can wait for a few months, anyway. And once the car's paid off, everything gets so much easier. Hell, once my credit card gets paid down again, everything will get much easier. And I still have savings. Okay, self. Calm down. It's going to be okay.

Ugh money. Why is money such a pain in everyone's ass. Back to fake people problems. Or repainting my web page. Or both. Both is good.

Get a 6" and a 2" putty knife and use those instead of painters tape: knife in one hand shielding the thing that shouldn't be painted, paintbrush in dominant hand painting. Saves tons of time and way more versatile.

It takes a bit of work to get the hang of it, but once you do it's so much easier than tape! (And you get a much neater edge, since paint can get in under the edge of the tape and all.)

It also helps if you remember to load up the paintbrush with plenty of paint -- most people don't put enough paint on the brush. It sounds paradoxical, but the more paint that's on the brush as you come up to the edge, the less hard you have to push to get coverage and the less likely you are to go over the edges.

Other than that, just go slowly and deliberately and have a rag on hand for wiping down anything that you miss with!
