Irish has no verb 'to have' nor one meaning 'to own. These concepts are expressed idiomatically using some of the prepositions introduced in earlier units. These structures and some idioms based on them will be introduced in this unit.

Possession is expressed with the verb bí and the presposition ag (at). The thing possessed is the subject, and the possessor is the object of ag.

Tá teach mór ag Cathal. Cathal has a big house. (There is a big house at Cathal.)
Níl páistí ag Áine. Áine has no children. (There are no children at Áine.)
Tá carr nua ag an ngréasaí. The shoemaker has a new car.
Bhí saoire mhaith againn. We had a good holiday.

If the possessor is a pronoun, the conjugated form is used as in the last example. With nouns, the same mutations conditioned by ag an apply as when ag means 'at'. In general, when the subject of bí refers to an inanimate object and the object of ag is human, the sentence will most likely be interpreted as meaning 'have,' although the possessee can occasionally also be human, as in the second example above.

Permanent ownership is expressed with is and the preposition le.

Is le mo mháthair an carr sin. That car is my mother's.
Is liomsa an leabhar sin. That's my book.
Cé leis an cóta? Whose coat is that?

In this usage, the thing owned comes last and is always a specific individual item, generally so identified by the use of an. Ownership of non specific items, indefinite nouns, is expressed by the bí...ag construction.

Níl carr ar bith agam. I don't own any car at all.
Tá trí theach ag mo dheirfiúr. My sister owns/has three houses.

Argh. Just... argh.

Where have you been, I hear you ask? Oh dear god.

So, okay, the weekend was fairly both restful and productive. I got the patio cleaned, I got some other stuff clean, I got some resting done. On Monday, I arranged with the boy to have dinner out with a friend who's undergoing some drama right now, and literally about half an hour later my Aunt calls down from the first and a half floor: "Did you know your brother and sister were driving down this weekend?"

No. No, I did not.

So it turns out my brother had decided this, planned it with my sister, told my Mom, and somehow neglected to tell me or my Aunt, who he would most likely be staying with. Thanks, Bro. You're a peach. I know you weren't raised by fucking wolves, I did some of the raising, so you could maybe tell us you're coming more than a week in advance? No? No. I went to dinner that night anyway instead of cleaning house because fuck that, I also shopped around for an emergency daybed (a little bit, I wasn't that interested in accomodating semi-last-minute notice of guests and we do have a spare mattress bedframe and spare twin bed. Did get sheets for it though.) and ended up curling up with cheesecake and bemoaning my siblings. The rest of this week, probably, will be devoted to cleaning and catching up on Camp Nano.

That and work's been hectic at least the last two days, so, argh. I have to finish cleaning the house (which thankfully isn't that messy, just a lot of putting stuff away and mopping floors/dusting) over the next two days and at some point sew a curtain for the upstairs bathroom window ugh. I have no idea when I'm going to get that done. I may take off Friday early to finish cleaning and do that tomorrow night. Double ugh.

How's your week been going?
