Jun. 18th, 2014 11:35 pmPronouns identifying possessors are always unstressed and come before the noun they possess, much like the article an. Most also trigger a mutation on the initial consonants of the possessed noun.
mo theach, my house
do theach, your house
a theach, his house
a teach, her house
ár dteach, our house
bhur dteach, your (pl) house
a dteach, their house
Before a vowel, the plural possessives prefix n-, and the feminine singular prefixes h. Mo and do become m' and d'
m'oifig, my office
d'oifig, your office
a oifig, his office
a hoifig, her office
ár n-oifig, our office
bhur n-oifig, your office
a n-oifig, their office
For contrast of these possessives, the suffix -sa/se is used, but it is attached to the noun possessed.
m'oifigse, my office
ár dteachsa, our house
An alternative is an teach seo agam, my house. an teach seo againn, our house (the house at me/us). It sis particularly common with plural possessors.
In Unit 10, ceann was introduced as a kind of pronoun used to avoid repeating a noun after numbers. It is used with demonstratives and possessives as well, with a meaning similar to English 'one' as in 'this one', 'that one'
Déanann sé drochscannáin, ach tá an ceann sin go maith. He makes bad movies, but that one is good.
Tá mo leabhar anseo, cá bhfuil do cheannsa? My book is here, where's yours?
Tá na húlla go maith; ithigí na cinn seo. The apples are good, eat these.
Feicim go leo leabhair ach ní fheicim mo chinnse. I see many books, but I don't see mine.
Bhí neart bia ann, an bhufair tú do chuid? There's plenty of food, did you get yours?
And I made it to the fifth chapter today! Which means almost a hundred pages in. It's becoming even more evident now, too, that the main area in which I'm lacking is vocab. That is to say, the sentences that are 80% or more words I already know, I can read straight off. You guys have no idea what a ... okay, some of you guys have no idea what a relief that is. Some of you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Ooof. I was going to do a check-in today but given that it's mostly a catalogue of me getting back into the writing habit I'm not sure I will tomorrow. Maybe?
