kittydesadeAdjectives ending in l, n, r, or mh lose a short vowel in their second syllable when a suffix is added, whether it is the plural ending or the feminine genitive singular.
saibhir
daoine saibhre: rich people
ainm na mná saibhre: the name of the rich women
álainn
cailíní áille: beautiful girls
ainm na mná áille: the name of the beautiful women
(when l and n come together, they become ll)
Broad consonants that come together as a result of vowel loss always become slender in the genitive (uasal - uaisle; ramhar - raimhre); in the plural they may become slender (uaisle) or not (ramhra); this must simply be learned for each word.
Predicate Adjectives
As noted previously, predicate adjectives show no agreement, but always occur in their basic form.
Tá an fear beag. The man is small.
Tá an bhean beag. The woman is small.
Tá na daoine beag. The people are small.
Tá mé beag. I am small.
Tá siad beag. They are small.
However, it should be remembered that the eight evaluative adjectives must be preceded by the particle go: Tá an lá go maith. 'The day is good' as opposed to lá maith, 'a good day'
So, it's, um. Blustery and wet out. On the plus side, I don't have to water the raised beds! I don't think I had to water anything in the garden. On the minus side, I was going to prune the tomatoes this morning dammit. On the other other hand, I probably without watering have time to get everything done, which isn't so much a reflection on how much I cram into a morning as I was planning on doing a couple extra things this morning. Also I get the boy's chores too yay.
Okay, for those of you left who are still reading this on LJ (it mirrors automatically) no, I do not really read LJ anymore. Here are a few good notes on how seldom anyone reads LJ anymore, and why, and other related things. I am on Dreamwidth under the same username! If you want to stop by and say hello.
A weird thing happened last night whereby I ended up writing 500 words in maybe ten minutes 'cause a muse got loud and had ideas. I have no idea if that means my writer brain is coming back, my writer muscles are coming back, or what, but I will take it? As a confidence booster if nothing else. Still going to try and finish the dime novel I've been working on, though. If I'm very very lucky (HAH when has that ever happened) I may be able to release a dime novel every couple of weeks for a bit. If not, well, maybe I'll have two dime novels and be able to start finishing shit. We'll see!
AND. And. I even remembered to bring the yarn to finish out one of my knitting projects to work, so I can do that in between writings. I am awesome. I am vast, I contain multitudes, and am very capable of multitasking.
Which is good because I have a metric shitton of tasks halfway finished dear lord.
