The Past Progressive
You have already seen this way of referring to past events in unit four. The past progressive of a verb consists of bhí + ag + verba noun
e.g. Bhí mé ag obair go dian inné. I was working hard yesterday.

Ag + verbal noun can also be used as follows:
Chuaigh mé ag tiomáint - I went driving
Chuaigh mé ag siúl - I went walking
(so, chuaigh mé na rosann - I went among the roses. HAH.)

To find the simple past tense of a type 1 verb remove -(e)ann from the present tense form, add lenition if the verb begins with a consonant or prefix d' if it begins with a vowel. Here are some examples:

pósann - marries
Phós mé anuraidh. I got married last year.
cuireann - puts, sends
Chuir mé litir abhaile. I sent a letter home.
caitheann - spends
Chaith mé seachtain ann. I spent a week there.
buaileann le - meets
Bhuail mé le hEibhlín. I met Eileen
ceapann - thinks
Sin é a cheap mé. That's what I thought.
tugann - gives
Thug siad cabhair dom. They gave me help.
itheann - eats
D'ith siad dinnéar. They ate dinner.
ólann - drinks
D'ól muid deoch. - We had a drink.

One verb makes its final consonant slender.
siúlann - walks
Shiúil mé abhaile. I walked home.

Since lenition makes f silent (written fh) verbs beginning with f are treated as if they begin with a vowel.
fanann - stays
D'fhan sé istigh. He stayed in. (pron. dan)
fágann - leaves
D'fhág sé nóta. He left a note. (pron. dág)
féachann - looks
D'fhéach siad orm. They looked at me. (pron. déach)

Lenition cannot always apply, of course.
scríobhann - writes
Scríobh mé litir. I wrote a letter.
leanann - follows
Lean mé iad. I followed them.

Woke up this morning in something of a Peptasha mood. Not entirely sure why, but now I want to do all the organization and all the physical training.

Which means that today, starting out with one scene in line edits while I do mail, then bashing the outline into shape at least a little bit more. German translation at lunch, then either line edits or drafting something for Fireside, because that sees like it'll come more quickly. Russian after UPS has gone, aiming for two scenes worth of line edits and no specific amount of outlining/drafting done, because I have no idea how busy it's going to be at work today. See what I mean about the Peptasha? Tonight, coming home, guitar practice, more writing tasks depending on what gets done during the day, dinner should be easy.

Prophecy tweet along last night was massive fun and that needs to be a relatively regular thing. To which end I have constructed a calendar. Oh, hey, which reminds me that my other major priority today should be getting the story I wrote on Twitter up on my website somewhere. And I need to finish one of the drafts I have for Kitty Ipsum and post it and augh. Too many things to do. But, no, the statement of intent for the day stands, and I'll rework it later today if I have to.

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Prophecy was a fun movie, too. And it got me to poke at Paradise Lost, which might me my favorite book-in-verse to read.
