So, I should probably do one of those about-me posts, shouldn't I? The first one wasn't, really. And I could use a break from allen wrenches.

Hi! I'm Jag. Most of the time I'm Jag, anyway, I've been Jag for very nearly twenty years... seriously, twenty years? Yeah, I guess twenty years next August. That's a little strange to think about. And sometimes I'm Kitty, because that makes for a decent nom de plume, but most of the time around here I'm Jag. I'm short and, well, stout-ish, my body type doesn't fit me well for being willowy and I could probably stand to lose a couple dozen pounds, but I'm also relatively muscular, so you won't see me talking much about my weight in terms of numbers on here. I dance, do yoga, and try to do some strength exercises like push-ups and things. I'm also asthmatic, it just runs in my family, so when the weather turns again I'll try to get out running and we'll see if I can expand my lung capacity at all. I'm half Mayan-Indian, which for functional and societal purposes is sort of like being half Mexican, and the other half is a bizarre mix of Western Europe, Eastern Europe/Russian Jew, bits of Native American from some tribe I've since forgotten (one of the NorthEast ones), bits of England. Something. My shape comes up a lot more often than my heritage, but sometimes when race issues are discussed I bring up my heritage, so there's background for you. I have a boyfriend who is referred on here as "the boy" and we've been together, jeez, ten years now? We just recently bought a house in town, not far at all from where we used to live and close to (one of) my aunt(s), both because it's a fucking cool house and because I didn't want to move too far from her for precautionary healthy reasons. Very precautionary, but what she has (MS) you don't get better from, so.

I speak seven languages with very varying degrees of fluency. I grew up in Washington DC, spoke English and Spanish equally in school and close to equally at home till I was about twelve, then I went to an English-only school (inasmuch as any high school was English only), studied first Latin and then French. So I'd say I'm reasonably fluent in French, though for both Spanish and French my speaking capacity is rusty, I need to practice some to get to where I can just speak normally. After high school I took two years of Japanese in college, and that's one of the languages you'll hopefully see soon, because I've been meaning to get back into practice with that. After college I fucked around for a couple of years, then decided to start learning Russian and German on my own. I've gotten to about a conversant level with both, I struggle more with Russian than with German right now, but I can do the basics. My awesome Russian tutor is [personal profile] kikibug13, and she helps me out a lot when I'm unsure of things. And about a year ago I finished both the Russian textbooks I'd been studying from, now I'm translating fairy tales into Russian to practice and studying Irish. When I get my office more unpacked, you'll start seeing the daily lessons.

Other stuff I do, well, right now will involve mostly fixing up the house. But I also roleplay, tabletop only these days although I used to do LJRP. And mailing list RP, back in the dawn of time also known as the mid nineties. Now that we're in a house that can support such an event, I look forward to hosting several games, and so does the boy! I sew and make costumes, usually for Dragon*Con. I knit and spin, and sometimes I fuck about with sculpey. I can weave, though I don't have a loom and with everything else going on in the house I'm not in a hurry to bring any of the aunts' looms (yes, plural, both aunts and looms) home with me. I fuck around in the kitchen more than cook, not so much from a lack of skill so much as from inconsistent inclination to experiment and play around with recipes. I play guitar awkwardly, whistle somewhat less so, and I dance. Bellydance a bit, more for exercise because I've never had a formal teacher, but also modern and jazz and ballet. Also for exercise, but in that case it's more because I'm too busy doing other things to go join a school. I did do ballet and modern and jazz from the time I was six till I was about eighteen.

Fandomy things! I feel like I should toss this in Because That's What You're Here For, though, really, I should know better. I am into or have been into a lot of shit. We'll start with the 80s fantasy movies, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, Legend, Last Unicorn, Willow, Princess Bride, Krull. Flight of the Navigator which was more squishy sci-fi than fantasy. I read John Bellairs, The Changeover, Madeleine L'Engle, Stephen King ... you know, let's just skip that and go to the present, right? Or at least the rough present. Yes, I've done the Firefly/Serenity, Buffy/Angel, SG1/SGA (but NOT SGU) thing. No, I haven't done BSG, Teen Wolf, PLL or Gossip Girl or any shows of that type, um. Any Doctor Who after the second? season/series or so of New Who. I love Old Who, but I'm just kind of 'eh' about New Who. I haven't done Supernatural past Season Six because, frankly, I hate it. So I stopped watching it rather than keep watching and bitch! I did the same with Heroes, I loved the first season, second season happened, and, well, then I had to endure third season because the boy wouldn't stop watching. I don't do anime or comedies as a general rule. Well, anime, really. I do older anime like Akira, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop, but not anything past ten, twelve, fifteen years ago it seems like. I don't do Bujold. I do do Dresden Files. Currently I do Haven, Castle if I can ever catch up with it, Warehouse 13 ditto, Leverage, Grimm... I did do Once Upon A Time but then I fell out of love with it and hit the rocks of disgust on the bottom. I don't do mainstream Marvel or DC comics verse because I did the X-thing in the early 90s and ended up spending around 20-30 bucks a month just to collect all the titles so I had the faintest fucking idea what was going on. Right now I prefer limited runners, and preferably after they've finished and are in graphic novel format. I will take recs for those, too! I like Transmetropolitan, Sandman, I liked Greek Street while it existed (does anyone know that one but me?), I started on Lucifer and then I think I forgot I was collecting it, um. What the hell else do I have. Various Alan Moore. Watchmen was nigh-on required reading for my social group in college. I have a few Hellblazers. I have all four issues of the Trenchcoat Brigade.

I trained as an anthropologist with a side order of history. Which explains why I ended up in a 150 year old house. I come from a long line of mild-mannered liberals, mostly Democrats, none of us crusaders but all of us ... cranky? Hell, I come from Washington DC, which is both less extreme and more liberal than a lot of the popular stereotypes of liberals/Democrats. I write, not exactly for a living but one of these days I'll make another try at it. I blog over here about Haven, Grimm, and apparently Person of Interest soon. The basic thrust of the blog is twofold: a) picking apart episodes of TV shows with the braintwin and all of our powers combined all our combined experience in performance art and whatever else we've picked up over the years, and b) picking apart the overarching metaplot, which both Haven and Grimm have. And keeping track of said metaplot. I write all kinds of things, but mostly what I like to write is in order of greatest to least, urban fantasy, pulp/noir/mystery, fantasy/fairy tale, science fiction, mainstream, the occasional self-indulgent romance. That goes for both fanfiction and original fiction. I have been published, a couple magazines and one anthology (since I don't think that other anthology ever actually came out) whose title for some reason escapes me now. Dammit. It was a lesbian twist on the Two Sisters story. Sleeping Beauty, Indeed! That was it. I live in the Appalachian mountains and love it here. I desperately need to finish unpacking the damn house.

Um. I'm pretty approachable, or I like to think so anyway! And most of all this is on this journal, which I don't generally bother to flock. But now it's in concentrated form so alloy'all can see what you're getting into. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I may or may not answer but you can definitely ask. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go figure out that the potrack is where the pots go, Jag, honestly, where is your head today, why the fuck I have two bottles of peppermint extract when I used it once in the past year, and what Murdock the cat knocked over this time.

Oh yeah. And I say 'fuck' a lot.
