Als, wenn, and wann are all equivalent to English 'when', but they are not interchangeable in German.
Als is used to introduce a clause concerned with a single event in the past or with a block of continuous time in the past.
e.g. Als Paula gestern in Hamburg war, ging sie ins Theatre. When Paula was in Hamburg yesterday, she went to the theatre.

1. Als ich ein Teenager war, ging ich oft ins Theater in New York.
2. Als ich aus Dragon*Con zurückgekehrte, ich Schnupfen bekommte.
3. Als ich Sasha Roiz sah, .... I can't say that in public. XD
4. Als ich James Callis traf, ich erleichtert war, weil er ist nicht so gruselig als Dr. Grant oder Gaius Baltar.
5. Als ich Sebastian Roche traf, wir sprachen Franszoich, Deutsch und Spanisch. Und er ist so gruselig als Edgar Waltz oder Stephan Laney.

Wann is used to introduce a clause concerned with possibilities or events in the present or future time. Wenn is also used to introduce a clause concerned with repeated events in past time.
e.g. Wenn Renate in Hamburg ist, geht sie ins Theatre. When Renate is in Hamburg, she goes to the theatre.
Wenn Erik in Hamburg War, ging er jeden Tag ins Theatre.

1. Wenn ich am Dragon*Con ist, ich immer [argh prepositions] zu Walk of Fame gehe.
2. Wenn ich mein Hause kauf, ich gebe eine Shindig!
3. Wenn ich meines Strickerei beende (?), ich ist bereit für eine Shindig!
4. Wenn Yuletide beginnt, ich muss viele Lebensmittel vorbereiten.
5. Wenn Nanowrimo endet, Yuletide beginnt!

Wann is used only for questions. It is used to introduce both direct and indirect questions.


Hey, look what I found! And yes, all of my German practice has to do with Dragon*Con or the House or something like.

In current events, blink. Blink blink. I mean, I'm not at all up on current Russian politics and who's against whom, but I was under the impression that this situation was pretty much The Establishment vs Punk Band. Was I wrong? And if not, what is this guy gaining from this? (Other than good international publicity, of course.)

Apparently suddenly realizing that a huge chunk of my brainpower is going to be freed for other things means my brain goes FINISH ALL THE THINGS. And then my headvoices have to go NO. Stoppit. So far the only major project unfinished (that y'all should be concerned with anyway) that I'm definitely going to get back to is Juke Joint Jezebel, the Supernatural what-if-Jess-lived fic I started back before the sky fell. Probably starting by re-reading that this weekend and maybe rewatching some of Supernatural Season 1, and then getting down to it. The outline's still languishing. I just need to sit and write. That, and another project I've been working, and Kink Bingo and Nano and Yuletide ought to keep me busy, and between the big projects I can finish up little odds and ends of things I've been meaning to finish or write, and never did. Which is much better than opening up ten gdocs and not being able to finish any of them because, heh, focus? What's that?

At least most of the filing is done. And there's a relatively decent load of shipping to do today, and after that there's writing I can do or knitting, depending on who needs to be where. I feel like maybe I should ramble on more about things, but I don't actually have much to ramble about today. Life is just not that interesting. Although, apropos of my German exercises, I like James Callis much more now, having met him, than when I was being creeped out by everyone he played ever.

Medvedev is Putin's hand puppet and United Russia is the Kremlin under another name. If Medvedev is making a public statement on something, you'd better believe Putin wanted that statement made.

(I'm guessing it's being done as a way to let Putin back down from something that's causing international condemnation without losing too much face.)

That second one I knew, but it's been so long since I've been regularly caught up on the politics I'm behind on who's alpha and who's the face.

International goodwill and bellying down was the only thing I could think of, but it seemed like an odd time, there hasn't been much pressure lately, everyone seems to be looking in other directions right now.

Either that or there's something else in the works that he needs to prep some goodwill in advance of. /cynical

Well, there's been a bit of international pressure because of the Libya thing, and also they've been looking a bit dictatorial because Aleksey Navalny (major figure in the opposition even though he's not an elected official, was the one who coined the phrase "the party of crooks and liars" for United Russia, is the guy who's usually being targeted whenever LJ gets DDOS'd again) is under indictment for embezzlement in ludicrously trumped-up charges. Like, blatant "we want you out of the way" thing. They might be trying something in advance of dumping Navalny in jail.

Now that wouldn't surprise me. Only so many activists allowed in jail at a time or something.
