To express need for an action, use the dative of the person + нужно or надо + infinitive. In such sentences, нужно and надо are interchangeable.

Нам нужно (надо) выучить наизусть это стихотворение. We have to memorize this poem. (lit. To us is necessary to memorize this poem.)

To express need for a thing, use the dative of the person + нужен (нужно, нужна, нужны) + nominative of the thing needed. Нужен agrees in gender and number with the thing needed, because that is the grammatical subject of the sentence. (Similar to the possessive!)

Ей нужны книги. She needs books. (lit. To her are necessary books)

Кому: Мне, Тебе, Ему, Ей, Нам, Вам, Им, Этому преподавателю, Нашей соседке, Вашим родителям
Что: нужен этот роман, нужно это письмо, нужна эта книга, нужны эти стихи
нужен нужен будет (нужна будет, нужно будет, нужны будут) нужен был (нужна была, нужно было, нужны были)

Нам надо (have to) is slightly different from мы должны (should; ought to; supposed to). должен comes from долг - duty or debt.

Вы должны заниматься сегодня. You are supposed to study today.
Вы должны были заниматься вчера. You were supposed to study yesterday.
Вы должны будете заниматься завтра. You will have to study tomorrow.

You still have access to most of your old data, and it'll all update eventually.) Fucking LJ, that was a somewhat engrossing and interesting conversation.

Oof. YES. Got pretty far on Wish You Were Here, and did a bunch of background stuff for novels and big bangs and things and got lunch made for today and everything done and Japanese mostly conquered! And pretty pretty Bruce while I do Russian. And. Stuff. I've done stuff! And it doesn't look like it's too rainy outside, which is good because I really don't want to go to the bus in the rain. And. Can you tell how hyper I am now? Right, today, finishing up stuff for deadlines, and then trying to finish the damn Black Ice story so that I can take notes and figure out what the hell is going on. And maybe doing another scene in the Sons of Anarchy-demon biker fic. I should also figure out what's going on in that world besides demon bikers. It might give me more plot eventually. Ooh. Demon bikers dealing succubus porn. Ahem.

Blargh. The only problem with being this hyper is I end up having difficulty focusing. Right. Gathering stuff and heading to work first of all, and then taking things one task at a time till my focus comes back.
