Expressing hearsay, using the plain form of verbs/adjectives/copula + ～そうです

ジョンソンさんは　来年　日本に　行くそうです。
I heard that Johnson-san will go to Japan next year.

山田さんは　日本に　帰ったそうです。
I heard that Yamada-san went back to Japan.

山下：　小学校の　時　日本に　住んでいたそうですね。
You lived in Japan when you were in elementary school, right?

ジョーンズ：　ええ。　二年生の　時から　三年生の　時まで　住んでいました。
Yes, I lived (there) from the second grade until the third grade.

山下：　どうして　日本に　行ったんですか。　
Why did you go to Japan?

ジョーンズ：　父が　日本の　大学に　つとめていたからです。
My father was employed at a Japanese university.

～そうです　expresses hearsay meaning I heard or I have heard. It is often used with ～によると, which means according to...

田中さんに　よると　キムさんは　けっこんしているそうです。
According to Tanaka-san, (I heard that) Kim-san is married.

The verb or adjective that precedes ～そうです must be in the plain form.

リーさんは　大学生だそうです。
I heard Lee-san is a college student.

リーさんは　大学生じゃないそうです。
I heard Lee-san is not a college student.

リーさんの　アパートは　せまいそうです。
I heard Lee-san's apartment is small.

パーテイは　あまり　面白くなかったそうです。　
I heard the party was not very interesting.


Okay. Thankfully, that was grammar rules and copying that over and so on, because I'm not sure I have brainpower left to do much of anything else. And is LJ acting up for anyone else or is it just me? I can't tell if my comments have posted or not.

I can tag things properly, I swear. I can also do an F-chord on the guitar now. Like a boss. This means I now know Am, A, E, Dm, D, G, and C, in addition to F of course. Next up is the hideous B, and Em which will probably be a refresher. And then... god knows. It'll take me a while to do the B, I think. And I'll keep working on my chord changes. This is probably the most I've done on guitar in a while.
