Expressing likes and dislikes, using すきです and きらい
アリスさんはテニスが好きです。
Alice-san likes tennis.
でも、やきゅうはすきじゃありません。
でも、やきゅうはすきじゃないです。
But, she does not like baseball.
はやしさんは どんな 飲み物が 好きですか。
What drinks do you like, Hayashi-san?
そうですね。 ぼくは ワインが 大好きですね。
Well, I like wine very much.
じゃあ、 ビールは どうですか。
How about beer?
ビールは ちょっと
Beer is a bit... (I don't like beer very much.)
In English, like is a verb, but in Japanese すき is a な-adjective. The negative is じゃありません。 The word for dislike or hate is きらい and is also a な-adjective. Because すき/きらい are adjectives, the object is indicated by が, never を.
すき and きらい can also be used before nouns. In this case, すきな means favorite and きらいな is the opposite of favorite.
好きな 果物は りんごです。
My favorite fruit is the apple.
きらいな 果物は バナナです。
The fruit that I don't like is the banana.
Because きらい can be a strong word, you might want to avoid using it to answer a question. You can use such expressions as ~は ちょっと... and あまり.
In the earlier chapters ~は どうですか means How is... Another meaning of ~は どうですか is How about...
私は ワインが 好きです。
I like wine
じゃあ ビールは どうですか。
Well, how about beer?
ビールも 好きですよ。
I like beer, too.
大好きです means like very much or really like.
... Wow, people are being irritating today. And ignorant, and flaunting their ignorance and I do not have time to indulge in being bitchy and arrogant. Which is what it would be, indulgent and bitchy and arrogant. I will indulge instead by eating a GIANT ECLAIR OF DOOM (seriously, do you guys remember this eclair? It's back a ways, but I posted pictures) and really good curry and having game.
I also indulged by picking up the first two trades of Lucifer. I'd forgotten just how bad having a comic book habit could be, but they didn't have Human Target and there are about ten other titles that I wanted, including that one, so I grabbed a couple. Not sure if Y: The Last Man is worth buying or just reading, Anna, have an opinion? I don't know if they have it at my local library but it has to be around somewhere.
Mm. Work was dead, as per usual. Got out an hour early because it was so dead. Three orders went out today. At least they were fairly chunky ones, but still not as much as it should have been. I also didn't get any writing done because I had to do the work two to three people normally do, and while it wasn't more than I could handle because it was so slow, my concentration kept getting broke. So, blah. I'll write some more either tonight or tomorrow. Nothing scheduled for me tomorrow.
I'm watching Push again. This movie entertains me way more than it should, I think. So does Chris Evans, who is really kind of cute when he's more mature and lightly bearded. I don't normally have a facial hair preference for men, although I don't dislike it on a lot of men. Not as much as I used to. But some just look better with it. Jeffrey Dean Morgan looks lumpy normally and downright strange clean shaven, not attractive at all. He needs stubble, at the very least. Chris Evans is kind of boyishly cute clean shaven but with that narrow growth of beard he becomes actually handsome. I very much like. And in both movies he plays a generally sweet if kind of snarky guy, who I also like. Both characters, that is.
Right. Time, I guess, to pick something to work on and work on it for a bit, while people get food and then while people eat food. Mmmm curry.
