Today, apparently, is my day to translate things. From English to Russian in the morning, and tonight from German to English. Which ought to be easier. The book says to read the essay and answer the questions, but since I have you, o captive audience of Livejournal, I will just translate the whole bloody thing.
Ich komme aus Washington D.C. und bin seit drei Wochen in Tübingen. Ich finde Tübingen sehr schön und auch interressant, aber sehr klein. Am Wochenende war ich in Berlin. Berlin ist toll und sehr groß. Ich denke, Washington ist nicht so groß, aber wie in Washington liegt dort alles weit auseinander.
I come from Washington DC [ed. YAY!] and have been for three weeks in Tübingen. I am finding Tübingen very nice and interesting, but very small. On the weekend I was in Berlin. Berlin is great and very big. Washington isn't so big, but in Washington everything is very spread out. [lit, word by word: but we in Washington lies there everything far apart.]
Was ist anders in Deutschland? Ganz einfach -- Amerika ist groß, Deutschland ist klein. Amerika hat zweihundertachtundsiebzig Millionen Einwohner, Deutschland hat nur dreiundachtzig Millionen. Und Deutschland ist nur etwa halb so großs wie Texas (oder Alberta).
What is different in Germany? Just about everything [lit. Simply everything] -- America/The United States is big, Germany is small. America has 270 million people, Germany has only 83 million. And Germany is only about half as big as Texas (or Alberta).
Für die Menschen hier sind Distanzen anders. Meine Freunde sagen: "Berlin ist weit weg von Tübingen. Fast 700 km." 700 km finde ich nicht weit. Von Seattle im Nordwestern der USA nach Miami im Südosten sind es fast 5500 km. Das finde ich weit! Aber von Tübingen nach Berlin ist ja nur eine Tagesreise. Das ist schön in Deutschland. Interessante Städte liegen oft nicht weit auseinander.
For the people here distance is different. My friend says, Berlin is far away from Tübingen. Almost 700km." 700 km I think isn't very far. From Seattle in the North-West US to Miami int he South-East is almost 5500km. That's far! Between Tübingen and Berlin its only a day's drive. That's nice in Germany. Interesting cities often lie not very far from each other.
Das Wetter ist hier anders. Generell sind die Temperaturen in Deutschland nicht so extrem wie sie manchmal in Nordamerika sind. Hier beeinflusst nämlich der Ozean das Klima und er beeinflusst es mehr im Norden als im Süden und mehr im Westen als im Osten. Mein Freund Michael kommt aus Hamburg im Norden. Dort ist der Sommer relativ kühl und der Winter ist mild. Aber in München im Süden von Deutschland ist der Winter ziemlich kalt und es schneit oft.
The weather here is different. Generally the temperature in Germany isn't as as extreme as it sometimes is in North America. After all, here we have the influence of the ocean winds [?] and the influence is greater in the North than in the South, more to the West than the East. My friend Michael comes from Hamburg in the North. There the summer is relatively cool and the winter is mild. But in München in the South of Germany the winter is very cold and it snows often.
Aber alles ist relativ. Auch Temperaturen! Im Sommer ist es hier nicht so heiß wie in Washington. Washington liegt ja auch circa 1200km weiter südlich als Tübingen. Meine Freunde hier finden 33 Grad im Sommer sehr heiß und sagen: "Oh, es ist furchtbar heiß." In Washington ist das ganz normal. Ich glaube, viele Leute hier finden das Wetter sehr wichtig. Sie sagen oft: "Oh je, es regnet." und "Oh je, es ist zu kalt!" oder "Oh, es ist zu heiß." Ich rede nicht so viel über das Wetter. Das finde ich zu uninteressant. Außerdem finde ich Schnee und auch Regen sehr schön. Hoffentlich schneit es viel im Winter. Dann gehe ich in die Schweiz zum Snowboarden.

They talk about nothing so much as the weather. They find it very interesting. In addition, they think that snow and rain are great. Hopefully it snows a lot this winter. Then I can go snowboarding in the snow.
Man, the urge to just give up and babelfish this was impressive by the end of it. Right. Click the damn dragon.
