Possession and Attribution (of): Genitive Case of noun phrases

To express possession, Russian uses the genitive case where English uses a noun + 's (or s' depending on the noun, but no one apparently pays attention to that anymore.)

Это квартира Вадима. -- This is Vadim's apartment.

The genitive case is used to answer the question чей when the answer is a noun or noun phrase.

Чья эта квартира?
Это квартира Вадима.
Чей этот ковёр?
Это ковёр Киры.
Чьё это письмо?
Это письмо нашего соседа.
Чьи эти книги?
Это книги моей сестры.

In Russian the genitive case is also used where English uses 'of.'
Это фотография Кати. This is Katya's picture OR This is a photograph of Katya.

1. Чья эта комната? Это комната нового студента.
2. Чей этот письменный стол? Это письменный стол нашего профессора.
3. Чьё это платье? Это платье моей мамы.
4. Чьи эти туфли? Это туфли её соседкы.
5. Чья эта спальня? Это спальня моего отца.
6. Чьи эти фотографии? Это фотографии них семьи.
7. Чьё это общежитие? Это общежитие этого университата.

… and I think this exercise is being faintly misleading, I think at least the indicating pronouns? Or whatever grammar part that is, should agree with the nouns, but I could be wrong. We're going to go with, yes, it is misleading. The second part could be interpreted as "This [noun] is [person's]" or "This is [person's noun]" so, we'll go with the second since that's how it was in the example, but the questions are "Whose is [this noun]" which means agreement. So. Yeah.
