kittydesade: (don't panic)
Okay. We'll pretend I lost my wallet without my credit cards in it at the time, because at this point the truth is really embarrassing. So I had to replace my ID with a non-driving ID, because getting my glasses in time would be too much of a hassle and, moving soon anyway. I go to the DMV but discover that my birth certificate is a hospital certificate, not an official certificate, and my tax forms aren't adequate for proof of social security number. Never mind. Time is getting to the short end but I call Mom, ask her to send over my actual birth certificate (which apparently she does have and forgot that I'd probably need, which, hey, I didn't know that either. live and learn) and my social security cards. Except she can't find them, she can only find the stub they're attached to, which has on it my a) social security number, b) name, and c) "keep this for your official records." Okay. Maybe it's an official record of my social, I know I washed my original one into a fair thee well but I got a replacement when I got my name changed when I was 18. She can't find that either, but, fair 'nuff, armed with what I think is proof of birth, name change document (I've had that since I left home with my hospital certificate, just because, well, I know how people like to have that. Court seal and everything. That's the ONE document I didn't have problems with.), and proof of SSN.

So, apparently, I have my birth certificate and my name change document, but the 'keep this for your records" official stub doesn't work. You can't laminate your SSN card because that renders it unusable as an official document. You're supposed to (I'm sure as hell not going to) keep it on you at all times as proof of your identity. It's PAPER. It isn't even cardboard, it's PAPER. You can wash the damn thing into oblivion, I know, I did it. It could get torn or ripped or otherwise very easily destroyed. And in order to get any sort of state id you have to have that, or a vehicle title with your SSN on it (mine doesn't), a credit card with your SSN on it (mine doesn't, does ANYONE'S?), a school ID with your SSN on it (mine never did, has anyone's? seriously. ... although I think my International Student ID might have had mine on it.), a work ID with your name on it (mine doesn't, does ANYONE'S barring a gov't worker?), or a tax form that isn't a W2. Which I eventually went with, because I did have a tax form with my SSN on it. Actually it was a tax correction form with my changed name on it, which was amusing and caused some confusion because the woman looked at my birth certificate and then my tax form and I had to point out that she had my name change form underneath when she blinked and asked who that was on my tax form. My original name is, for example, Lily Violet Smith. My name now as it's been changed is Violet Gwenhwyfar Jones. Not very similar.

BUT. ARGH. Just argh. This took THREE FUCKING TRIPS to the DMV. I hate the DMV. I think most people in most countries hate going to the DMV. And then I have to go to the social security office later and THEN I will have to go to the DMV AGAIN in NC to get my damn driving license. After I get my glasses because I don't know what their vision standards are and I haven't had my eyes checked in a couple years. And I'd rather just do it all at once. Or fucking try to. Fucking GOVERNMENT. I did NOT NEED THIS STRESS.

More boring moving stuff )
