kittydesade: Jessica Biel: white brunette with hair in a severe ponytail and sungalsses giving a stern-incredulous look (you're babbling again)

Goddamn I really need to get better about writing in here on a regular basis. Today what spurred this on was the semi-panic rising about tumblr maybe going down. I say semi-panic because for some people it's panic and for other people it's that Ben Affleck smoking a cigarette and looking 1000% done with everything gif.

If that upsets you, skip the paragraph after the Nanowrimo bit as best you can.

It looks like the last thing I wrote about was the poor cat, no more details go look in my last entry if you really want to know. Since then we continue to see Felix Doe, international cat of mystery around. Though it continues to refuse to come near us. We took Murdock to the vet this morning for a checkup and because we cannot do a damn thing on him without him turning it into a whole production, so the vet gets to drug him a little and put the blood sugar sensor on him. And then we realized we hadn't seen the reader since months before Maggie passed, so hopefully the phone app will work with it. Oops.

There are wildfires in my half of the state, including one that's one county over, so that's fun on my nerves. So far we're not under an evacuation order or even a "be ready for an evacuation order" though, and the fire closest to me is slowly coming under containment. Half of the news is burn bans rather than evacuation orders, so I'll take it. It's all unsettling, but I'll take it.

The other awful thing that happened was the Maine shooter, in a more personal sense of awful (because it was awful regardless and doubly so considering how goddamn many of these we've had in the US and how deeply unsurprised and perhaps even jaded we've become towards them) which is that my baby brother now lives up there. About half an hour from where the shooter was doing his wicked deed. So I spent that night reminding myself that he has two children under 5 and he teaches and his wife is a doctor and they are not going out socially half an hour away from their house on a weeknight. I sent my brother an email, I tried to get ahold of my Mom the next day just to make sure, only to find that my sister was in labor. Which I knew her due date was towards the end of October but, oy, timing my newborn nephew. Your timing. However my brother and his family were fine, they'd gone out of state for a bit to stay with family until the shooter was found (or, well, until his corpse was confirmed) and my sister and my new nephew turned out to be fine, and everyone is fine and happy and I have new nephew pictures.

Work continues to be super busy but my contract was renewed for two years, so that makes me super happy. And I got a very excellent code evaluation which was basically "we have no issues with your code, here are some things you can tweak to make it even more efficient or clean, keep doing what you're doing." Which is I think the second? Third? in a row that was like that. I'm so happy. Especially since it doesn't feel like I'm putting in a struggle's amount of effort into my job. I'm putting in the effort I need to, but since a lot of this code I've been doing for decades it's a bit like translating in Spanish, I consider if I'm being accurate and efficient and have confidence in what I'm doing.

I'm doing Nanowrimo this year, but I'm also doing it without a net an outline, which is ahahahah. I'm running into moments when I'm all "fuck what do I do next?" because I have only a vague idea of what the antagonist presence is, who's doing what to whom, and what's going on. I don't know that this novel will actually go anywhere or do anything except get trunked at the end of this. On the other hand, I'm doing Nanowrimo. It's been a little while.

Trying to think what else has been going on. Thankfully I think that might be largely it? We had a mouse come into our seven cat household (plus the bonus cat) the other night, for which I can only blame toxoplasmosis. Bat Cat played with it until it died, I don't think he actually killed it on purpose, but he was definitely having fun and the mouse definitely wasn't, and we didn't see what he was doing in time. (I'm not sure we would have, it all went very quick, which I suppose is good for the mouse.)

I got my hair re-dyed red in the one week and change that the covid wastewater levels were down. The levels are coming back up again, it looks like. Not too happy about that, but I'm glad I got my salon time in. I also picked myself up a couple of nice chokers as recompense for the shitty... past month or so? Too many nights being unsettled by the various events of things. I have pictures around here somewhere, I should be more assiduous about posting them on DW. I think that's about everything.

Oh! I'm also studying for my CPACC exam, that's my "Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies" exam. It's not necessary to do the job I'm doing now but it could be helpful in job hunting down the line, and my job qualifies me as "a person working in accessibility." And there's a specialty sub-exam for web accessibility. And it might also open me up for other jobs in the company I'm currently working for. And I just also like studying, so this will be fun.
