Random made up practice! Of both the le-preposition and the 'like' construction.
Is breá liom ceol.
Is maith liom siúl.
Ní maith liom peil.
Is breá liom mo teach. (I think.)
Is breá liom damhsa.
An maith leat scoil?
An maith leat damhsa?
An maith leat Cillian Murphy? (Whaaaat.)
Is breá le Thorin ór. Ní maith leis lucharacháin. (AHAHAHAHAH 'elf' is in my Irish dictionary.) (Even if it's not quite the right kind of elf.)
Is breá le Bane cumhacht. (power) Ní maith leis bochtanas.
Is breá le Alan a mac tír. (wolf. I think.) Ní maith leis lucharacháin.
Is breá le Eve gunnaí. Ní maith leí ... something. I don't have the right words.
There are several ways of putting adjectives in the plural form.
a) the most common is to add -a after a broad consonant or -e after a slender. e.g.
bán, bána
dubh, dubha
gorm, gorma
daor (expensive), daora
deas (nice), deasa
compordach (comfortable), compordacha
mín (smooth), míne
bocht (poor), bochta
cialimhar (sensible), cialimhara
ciúin (quiet) ciúine
b) however, a or e sometimes causes the loss of the previous vowel
saibhir (rich), daoine saibhre
láidir (strong), daoine láidre
bodhar (deaf), daoine bodhra
ramhar (fat), daoine ramhra
folamh (empty), tithe folmha
íseal (low), tithe ísle
c) -úil becomes úla:
leisciúil (lazy), daoine leisciúla
flaithiúil (generous), daoine flaithiúla
álslúil (useful), rudaí álslúla
d) adjectives which end with a vowel do not change
stocaí uaine (green socks)
stocaí fada (long socks)
stocaí buí (yellow socks)
Don' wanna be awake. Wanna be curled up in my nice warm bed with my nice warm kitties drowsing.
That said, holy damn. I managed to get the plurals right on two nouns I had to look up in Irish. I looked them up for confirmation and, yes, it's right. I'm not sure the other words are right, but I'll take what small victories I can get. Go go pattern recognition brain? (Also deeply amused that my dictionary has the Irish for 'elf,' even if it's not the right kind of elf. Didn't feel like dragging out a Tolkien dictionary.)
And managed to get Japanese done last night, and my bannock, and some blogwork. I cannot say I managed not to be bitchy on the blogwork, but maybe it came off more as classy snark? I don't know. We're going to have to read over that one carefully to make sure our biases are labeled and pushed out of the way. Though we did find some bits of cleverness we hadn't spotted before, which is good for my sense of playing fair.
And I managed to get sleep last night! Which isn't that unusual, it's just that when the boy leaves early for work, if he gets out of work after his eight hours are up he comes home at fuck o'clock in the morning, and then feels the need (possibly with justification, she said, looking at the machete in the corner of the room) to stomp around letting me know it's just him and he's home and it's not an intruder. And then I wake up in the middle of the night and it takes me a while to get back to sleep again.
(Centralia's lovely baritone is still immensely unfair.)
I can't believe it's Thursday already. I still have too much shit to do, I have no idea how I'm going to do it (yes I do, calendar and to-do lists and so on and so forth and still moving) and oh god how is it only Thursday? Which about sums up my state of mind at the moment. Come on, self, you know what you have to do, you have the list. Let's get to it. As soon as I get various scenarios of character angst, rage, and doom out of my head. Bad head. No distractions.
