Über vier Jahrzehnte lang gab es praktisch zwei deutsche Haupstädte: Bonn und Ost-Berlin. Theoretisch blieb Berlin jedoch immer die Hauptstadt. Als 1994 die letzten alliierten Soldaten die Stadt verließen, war Berlin erst seit vier Jahren wieder die offizielle Haupstadt von Deutschland, aber Bonn war bis Sommer 1999 der Sitz der Regierung. 1945 hatten die Allierten die ehemalige Hauptstadt des Dritten Reiches in vier Sektoren aufgeteilt und sie kontrollierten Berlin bis zur Wiedervereinigung. Wenn die Haupstadt und Deutschland geteilt waren -- so argumentierte man -- konnte das Land nie wieder stark genug werden, um einen neuen Krieg anzufangen.

For over four decades there were practically two German capitals: Bonn and East Berlin. Theoretically Berlin had always remained the capital. As when 1994 the last Allied soldiers the country passed, Berlin had already for five years been the official capital of Germany, but Bonn was until summer of 1999 the seat of government. 1945 the Allies had divided the former capital of the Third Reich into five sectors and they controlled Berlin until reunification. When the capital and Germany were divided -- so [it was] argued -- the country could never again be strong enough to start a new war.

Europa hatte Angst vor einem starken Deutschland, denn es war im 20. Jahrhundert für zwei Weltkriege verantwortlich gewesen. Deutsche Soldaten hatten zwischen 1938 und 1944 außer der Schweiz alle Nachbarländer zumindest eine Zeitlang besetzt. Außerdem hatten die Nationalsozialisten nicht nur im eigenen Land, sondern auch in allen besetzten Nachbarländern systematisch die jüdische Bevölkerung verfolgt und in Konzentrationslager gebracht. Im Holocaust starben über sechs Millionen Juden. Außer den Juden verfolgten die Nationalsozialisten auch noch Sinti und Roma, Behinderte, Homosexuelle sowie ihre politischen Gegner -- die Kommunisten, Sozialisten, und Sozialdemokraten.

Europe had fear of a strong Germany, for it was responsible for two World Wars in the 20th century. German soldiers had occupied all neighboring companies other than Switzerland for a while between 1938 and 1944. Also the National Socialists not only in their own country, but also in the occupied neighboring countries systematically pursued the Jewish population and put them in concentration camps. Over six million Jews died in the Holocaust. Besides the Jews, the National Socialists also pursued the Sinti and the Roma, the disabled, homosexuals, and their political opponents, the communists, socialists, and social democrats.

Nach dem Ende des Krieges wurden die Spannungen zwischen den Russen und den drei westlichen Siegermächten (England, Frankreich, und den USA) immer stärker. Sie kulminierten schließlich 1948 in der Berliner Blockade. Die Russen wollten die westlichen Soldaten zwingen Berlin zu verlassen und blockierten die Straßen von und nach Berlin. Unter der Führung Amerikas organisierten die westlichen Alliierten die Berliner Luftbrücke. Ein Jahr lang versogten die Flugzeuge die Stadt mit allem, was die Leute zum Leben brauchten -- von Rosinen bis Kohle. Und deshalb nannten die Berliner die Flugzeuge der Luftbrücke "Rosinenbomber."

After the end of the war the strain/strained relations between Russia and the three Western (powers?) (England, France, and the USA) were stronger and stronger. This finally culminated in 1948 in the Berlin Blockade. The Russians wanted the western soldiers [something something Berlin] and blockaded the streets to and from Berlin. Under the leadership/auspices?/head of America the western Allies organized the Berlin Airlift. For a year planes [something] the city with everything the people needed (for living) -- from raisins to coal. And therefore the Berliners named the airplanes of the airlift "raisinbombers"

Okay! So, that went well. The plumber came, said they'd start probably today (Tuesday, that is), and offered some good suggestions how we could hide some piping they'd lay externally so we didn't have to tear up too much of the wood. We all drooled over the original wood paneling and hardwood floors and everything, and he explained that by the end of it all most of the maze of twisty pipes all alike would probably be gone, so that's all right. Hopefully that means this will get cleared soon, because now all that's needed for the loan and the closing is the final inspection post-plumbing. Cross fingers!

Someone was taking their turn at sporking the Republican/conservative notion of bootstrapping, rich people are rich because they worked hard for it dammit, their hard-earned monies for them. Because obviously no one else works hard for their money. Oh, wait. Effort does not directly translate to riches and success. That's an ideal model, not an actual one. If it were an actual model, I'd've been published already or I'd've gotten a damn good paying translation job somewhere based on several years of studying other languages. If it were an actual model, there'd be a lot more successful people. If it were an actual model, all this crap I've put into getting this house? I'd already have it. Jackasses.
