We use the word 時 to describe when something happened or happens.
e.g. [sentence A] 時, [sentence B]: When A, B
The sentence A always ends with a short form, either in the present tense or in the past tense. You can decide which tense to use in A by doing a simple thought experiment. Place yourself at the time the main event B takes place, and imagine how you would describe the event in A. If the A is current or yet to happen, use the present tense in A. If A has already taken place, use the past.
The present tense in A: If, at the time the main event B takes place, A is current or still in the future, use the present tense in A:
チベットに行く時、ビザを取ります。
I will get the visa issued when I go to Tibet
A: ------------[going to Tibet]------ チベットに行く時
B: ----[having visa issued]---------- ビザを取ります。
Note that as long as event A occurs after event B, the clause A gets the present tense (行く) irrespective of the tense in clause B (取ります 取りました). In the example below, the whole sequence of events has been shifted to the past: at the time you applied for the visa (B) the departure (A) was yet to be realized. The temporal order between the two events is exactly the same as in the example above, hence the present tense of . Note especially that we use the present tense in A, even if the two events took place in the past.
チベットに行く時、 ビザを取りました。
I had the visa issued when I was going to Tibet.
Observe more examples of this tense combination.
寝るとき、 コンタクトを取ります。
I take out the contact lenses(B) when I go to sleep. (A)
出かけるとき、 ドアにかぎをかけました。
I locked the door (B) when I went out. (A)
Clause A also gets the present tense, when the state of A holds when event B takes place.
さびしい時、 友だちに電話します。
I call up friends (B) when I am lonely. (A)
Note that な-adjectives get な, and nouns get の before 時.
寒い時、 あたまがいたくなります。
I get a headache when it is cold.
The formation of the verbal noun:
There are various distinctive endings. Notice how e or a is inserted before some of them to agree with a preceding slender or broad consonant.
ith (eat) +e = ag ithe (eating)
tiomáin (drive) +t = ag tiomáint (driving)
déan (do, make) +amh = ag déanamh (doing, making)
caith (spend) +amh = ag caitheamh (spending)
fág (leave) +áil = ag fágáil (leaving)
feic (see) +áil = ag feiceáil (seeing)
féach (look) +int = ag féachaint (looking)
lean (follow) +úint = ag leanúint (following)
fan (stay) +acht = ag fanacht (staying)
éist (listen) +acht = ag éisteacht (listening)
tosaigh (begin) +ú = ag tosú (beginning)
bailigh (collect) +ú = ag bailiú (collecting)
In some cases no ending is used:
ól (drink) -- ag ól
foghlaim (learn) -- ag foghlaim
Some verbal nouns are irregular in form:
téigh (go) -- ag dul
tar (come) -- ag teacht
Some ordinary nouns serve as verbal nouns without having any special ending attached to them, e.g. obair (work, working)
Tá mé ag obair. I am working.
Tá an obair ag tosú. The work is beginning.
Next up, combining this lesson with the previous one. And repeating until it's fixed in my head.
I think I'm actually out of stuff I can research as regards to That House in particular. Which means it's time to research things relating to house buying in general, finish reading over that sample offer thing, much less exciting. Bah. Hopefully the boy is going to the bank today to figure that part out, and then we'll do something else. I want this to be linear goddammit. Unfortunately what I want and what happens or ends up happening ain't ever exactly been similar.
I need more Robert Carlyle spinning in Once Upon A Time. Mostly, I need more hot men doing work with their hands hand porn. I have no idea why I need this, but I do. Visuals and physicality, not that I pay attention to this kind of thing. Hell, I'd take more Jackie Earle Haley as Guerrero working with the guns or, um. Something. I need more of this in my life. What? I have very obvious erotic/entrancement patterns. Adding that second one because it's not even necessarily erotic, just, ooh pretty. I like hot men with distinctive physicality who do things with their hands. And their bodies. Not those kinds of things.
Oh, I know what I need more of. Musician hand porn. Someone find me hot guitarist footage.
... you know what's funny is that the second I typed that, Anna sends me links to hot violinist footage. Which is similar enough!
It's raining out. It's storming out. I don't want to go to work, I want to stay at home and knit and play guitar. Of course, it's entirely possible that at work I won't have much to do other than sit and knit and spin and do things with my hands, so there's always that. But I still don't want to go and find out that I have to do less fun things. Ah well, work always has moments of being less fun than we want, I'm still damn lucky to be where I am doing what I do.
This does not mean that you should not send me links to working hands porn, though.
