To ask the name of a person or animal, use зовут with the accusative case.

Как зовут (вашего преподавателя/эту студентку/твою кошку/твоих друзей)?
Как вас/тебя/его/её/их зовут?

To ask the name of a thing, use называется or называются with the nominative case.

Как называется/называются этот роман/эта книга/эти рассказы?

Как он/она/они называется/называются?

Note the change in word order when there is a pronoun. Pronouns tend not to be at the end of a sentence and thus come before the verb in these constructions.
