The verbs говорить – to say, думать - to think, спрашивать - to ask, and отвечать – to answer allow you to speak about a third person in the interpreting exercises: She says that…, he thinks…, they are asking… etc. Below you see some lines that might come up in interpreting. Practice changing them from direct speech into indirect speech.

Образец:
What’s your name and patronymic? Он спрашивает, как ваше имя-отчество.
Меня зовут Кирилл Павлович. He says his name is Kirill Pavlovich.

What’s your last name? Он спрашивает, как ваша фамилия?
Савенко Savenko, he says.
Is that a Ukrainian last name? Он спрашивает, фамилия – украинская?
Украинская. He says it is Ukrainian
Where do you live?Он спрашивает, где вы живёте?
Здесь, в Москве. А вы американец? He says here, in Moscow. He asks, are you American?
Yes. Он отвечает, да.
